#2 in a Series – Marketing Material Distribution @ Kid Sporting Events

By
Real Estate Agent

In the earliest days of my 40 year career as a Realtor, my children were young and still at home.  During that time, they were active in competitive swimming. Originally, they swam on a local recreation team, then moved onward to the Sacramento YMCA.  Ultimately they all swam at the Arden Hills Swim Club, ran by one-time, legendary Olympic Swim Coach, Sherm Chavoor

I found from my children’s participation on the swim team, there was a beneficial side effect to building my business.  That benefit came, not only from the accumulated relationships with other local swim parents. It came from more distant relationships forged during swim meets throughout California, and Nevada.

In those years, I created calendars of all the AAU swim meets scheduled for the year. These were provided to swim parents throughout the Far Western States swim community. I also created newsletters which had local news, real estate market reports and information. Those were distributed to parents in the Greater Sacramento region. If you are wondering why I also marketed to those who didn’t reside in my community, the answer is REFERALS.

The swim community provided me with an opportunity to forge bonds and friendships far and wide.

Later on, I expanded upon the idea of marketing beyond just swim parents, and, I often attended local Little League baseball games, soccer matches, and other sporting events!

I wasn’t above regularly walking my “farm area,” to deliver my marketing materials.  However, I learned that I covered more ground, and distributed to more people quickly, when they were all seated close together, in the stands at swim meets and games.

Real estate marketing can be quite an expense, and the cost of distribution can be a large part of that expense.  However, I found there are ways to deliver quality materials into the hands of prospective clients, and significantly contain distribution cost.

In this series (which this is #2 of), I am continuing to bring ideas, I have successfully used.

Hello Myrl - it is my belief that so much of the success of what is found in life is through the combinations we mix together.  It seems apparent to me that your real estate recipe in those early years in the industry combined the activities of your children along with the realty ingredient.  Obviously, this is the work of a smart cookie.   Good for you.

Good morning, Myrl... another fantastic idea and entry into the September AR Challenge. I entered the real estate world after all kids were grown and grandchildren popping out regularly. So I was never able to develop those kinds of kids-activity related relationships.

Michael Jacobs - You're absolutely right.  I think it is important to find out how you enjoy spending your time.  Whether it's community involvement, sports, or hobbies.  Then tailor your marketing, so that it incorporates into those activities.

Roy Kelley - You're welcome.  I hope you and Dolores are enjoying your weekend, as well.

Bill Salvatore - East Valley - I hope you are having a pleasant Saturday.

Nina Hollander, Broker - For those who no longer have kids at home, it's important to find activities in your community that you enjoy.  Networking with those we are close to, is a valuable tool for marketing.

Myrl Jeffcoat hi Myrl... I've just never been a "networking" kind of person. And I doubt that at my age I will change.

Myrl both my boys were involved in local sports, and the parents of the kids on those teams were an excellent source of business for me.

Kathy Streib - Sometimes the simplest of methods are the most effective.

George Souto - I'm convinced when we are involved, one way or another in the community, that is our best source of clientele.

A fantastic idea and you're absolutely correct - those who don't live in the area or want to move to the area still know people who do!

Good morning Myrl,

As you know my son is a swimmer and had a scholarship swimming for Clemson. I spent many years attending swim meets, timing etc. Good for you for finding ways to deliver quality materials into the hands of prospective clients, and significantly contain distribution cost with the relationships you formed! Brilliant creativity!

A great method of building clientele and potential clientele awareness of who you are and what you do is to attend community functions and get involved with the members of school or community organizations.
