The Grab Bag isn't always fun and games. Every once in a long while, something serious comes along that needs to be shared, and this one is more likely to leave you with a furrowed brow than a smile.   As an economist, I've always been bemused by the concept of money - inherently worthless paper, base metal or now computer bits that make up what is really no more than a social construct yet is central to so much of, well, everything. This is especially true of real estate, where it's our prime measure and the fuel for our markets.   What follows below is a visualization that can help us develop a perspective on money and money markets. I'm not going to go all economist on you and try to explain it - if you follow the graphic all the way to the bottom, you'll come to your own conclusion...

The below video was produced by Robert Surgenor several years ago that tells the true story of our National Anthem. I GUARANTEE you, if you watch this video, you will never think of our National Anthem in the same way again.   Wishing you a wonderful Fourth of July!On this historic day filled with picnics, parades and fireworks, we proudly celebrate our independence and the aspirations of all who live within this great country.    May God bless America on our Independence Day!

As a professional Home Stager it's my job to improve appearance, to create appeal, to highlight potential. Most people are living busy and stressful lives and their homes reflect it. Our homes are set up for our convenience and for our comfort....not to impress others.Maybe it's been several years since you made any changes and your home needs some updating.Maybe your hobbies and collections have gotten out of hand and taken over the home.Maybe you have decided to list your home for sale and the "whatever is most convenient and comfortable for me"  look won't have buyers reaching for their checkbook.Whether you are selling or you're just ready for a change, I've put together a list of twenty things you can do to help you improve and update the appearance of your home. In no particular o...

Pull out the patriotic attire, grill and outdoor games – Independence Day is just around the corner. This American holiday is all about reflection on our nation’s freedom with friends and family, usually at a backyard barbecue.  However, the Fourth of July has been named the “deadliest holiday weekend” by the Los Angeles Times, and its surrounding days pose many threats, too.  Before planning your celebration, familiarize yourself with the dangers associated with the holiday, and take the steps to keep your loved ones safe. Let Freedom Ring with Fireworks Alternatives   Fireworks are a quintessential part of any Fourth of July celebration. But before you decide to celebrate our nation’s freedom with red, white and blue explosions in the sky, it’s important to understand the danger invol...

Evaluating Neighborhoods: 4 Things to Consider Before Purchasing a Home From finding the right agent to discovering the home you can truly feel comfortable in, there are a variety of things involved in the home buying process. However, it’s important not to get caught up in the home and ignore altogether the community you’ll be living in. If you’re planning a move to a new neighborhood, here are some things you should look into before putting in an offer.Local AmenitiesA peaceful, picturesque community is ideal, but if there are not a lot of resources nearby for your family, it’s possible that your new neighborhood may not be the best fit. Instead of having to get in the car and drive everywhere, ensure you research nearby community centers, green spaces and recreational spots so your f...

In 2015, depending on the kind and type of identity theft we are talking about, identity thieves impacted 1.5 million people or more, says the Javelin Strategy & Research report. That’s more than double than for 2014.The move from stripe cards to chip cards has motivated crooks to fasten their seatbelts and really take off with an accelerated mode of operation. For them, your Social Security Number is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Thieves will use it to set up new accounts in the victims’ names, then go on spending sprees. This kind of identity theft is called new-account fraud. This can go on for months or years before the victim realizes it. Sometimes the victim never finds out. These cases can also slip by the victim’s bank. A favorite scam is for the thief to create a f...

See Dick run. See Dick run to his office and submit an offer on an exceptional, well-priced home in a great location with endless amenities and upgrades! He is trying to beat Jane and any other agents who may be writing one as well on the property. The sellers are looking for a full-price offer and to them, cash really doesn't matter in this transaction because the home is well worth the listed price. Several showings per day proves that point. Dick says his buyer has cash and can close quick but his comps aren't coming anywhere close to list price. Jane's client will require a mortgage. She has done her 'home' work, finding comparables that indeed justify offered price. Guess whose clients will get an accepted offer? Dick winged it, wrote a low-ball offer, refusing to educate himself a...

Purchasing land can seem like a monumental task to those who have never ventured down that road. There are many different laws and regulations that accompany land transactions that you never have to deal with or even think about when buying a traditional home. A few questions that you need to first consider are whether or not you want to buy a plot of land in an already subdivided location or would you rather purchase your parcel far away from the city limits? What is the difference between an infill lot and raw land? An infill lot is a parcel of land that is located in an already developed subdivision. The surveys have been done, the land has been leveled and graded, and the parcel sizes have been marked and divided. In most cases utilities have already been run to the lots and roads a...

The Medicare trust-fund, which provides coverage to 55 million Americans, will exhaust its reserves by 2028. Similarly, the Social Security trust-fund, which provides retirement benefits to 49 million Americans, will be depleted by 2034, triggering a 21% benefit cut if Congress doesn't act. Social Security and Medicare accounted for 41% of federal spending last year, up from 36% in 2011. Nature As Neighbors - We Love BeesWe recently sent our clients a "Bee Magnet" and a quick reminder to take steps to help save these important pollinators. We were so happy to see many respond and share the ways in which they're helping. This is one of our favorite photos from a Multi-Gen family we worked with last year. We found them a  5-acre estate just outside of Washougal and they have since planted part of the acreage in wildflowers. We think the results are charming. Thanks Genia, Russell, Gary, and Karla - you are all greatly appreciated!
