We all make mistakes. Sometimes, those mistakes cause harm and we need to make an apology. But recently, I have seen several situations where the parties attempted what turned out to be unsuccessful resolutions, and they all made me wonder whether making an apology has become a lost art. In each of these, it was clear that an apology, rather than a discussion, was necessary. Each ran into a dead end when the apology consisted of something like this: "I'm sorry that you're upset." That's not an apology. At best, it's a statement of sympathetic support, only acceptable when issued by an uninvolved bystander. At worst, it's a statement that the speaker has been inconvenienced by the damaged party's reaction, a different way to say "If you had it together, maybe you wouldn't be so sensitive...

Yesterday I received a call from Margaret Rome in Baltimore MD. If you don't know Margaret Rome, you should.... Margaret has a weekly radio show in Baltimore that she has been doing for years... Margaret called to tell me that she really enjoyed reading my blog about my "My Front Porch Makeover" She said she actually enjoyed the blog so much that "she was going to talk about it on her radio show and mention my name"! Sweet!  I was thrilled!  Receiving a comment on your blog is one thing, but actually getting a personal call and this kind of recognition definitely was extraordinary and "made my day".   Thank you Margaret!! You can follow Margaret's blog and her words of real estate wisdom and general all around inspiration here: Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland Margaret not only is a re...

Hiking on Dripping Springs Trail, Organ Mountains Last Sunday was a beautiful spring day here in sunny southern New Mexico. We took advantage of the great weather, packed a snack and grabbed our walking sticks and headed up to the Organ Mountain Desert Peaks National Monument. Our trail of choice this particular day was Dripping Springs Trail. Dripping Springs Trail is accessible from the Visitor Center located at the end of Dripping Springs Road. (see map below) There you will find a trail that I would categorize as easy to moderate. On the way up you will discover several historic buildings, all part of the Dripping Springs Resort originally built in the late 1800's. Later, the site was purchased by Las Cruces physician, Nathan Boyd, and was turned into a sanatorium. Now the ruins can...

Who or what is Jimmy Crack Corn (and I don't care)? While you are contemplating that, who is the itsy bitsy spider and how can it live in a water spout? If that is not enough, why does old MacDonald who has a farm say E I E I Oh.. all the time? Then, there is the Alphabet song which is so much fun but means just what?KIDS DON'T ASKNone of this matters of course to a little kid who is singing all this. It is called innocence and it is priceless. The thing is, when you start questioning any of this, it is a sign that your innocence is becoming of less and less and another dynamic is entering in called growing up...aw shucks!WHAT IS A GROWN UP?Precisely when you are through growing up is not known. Just outside Port Charlotte, real estate agents are pointing to a fossil site maintained by the University of Florida as a selling point to families moving into the area. The site is located in a channel of Peace River, just a mile northwest of Nocatee in DeSoto County, making it a quick trip from Port Charlotte. Real estate agents can use this as a selling point for families with school aged children who have an interest in paleontology. The site’s fossils are estimated to be between 11,000 and 20,000 years old. The area is filled with remnants of the Late Pleistocene Epoch, with abundant proof of Rancholabrean land mammals, although precise carbon dating is impossible due to lack of collagen in the fossils (a common problem in Florida river areas.)Come to Life in Fossil SiteThere is pl...

We often talk about the financial reasons why buying a home makes sense.  But often, the emotional reasons are MORE powerful or compelling reasons.   The top 5 reasons to own a home:   1)  It means having a good place to raise children & provide them with a good education.     From the best neighborhoods to the best school districts, even those without children at the time of purchasing their home, may have this in the back of their mind as a major reason for choosing the location of the home that they purchase. 2)  You have a physical structure where you & your family feel safe.     It is no surprise that having a place to call home with all that means in comfort and security.   3)  It allows you to have more space for your family.     Whether your family is expanding, or an older fami...

Denise Lones has some great suggestions on how you can offer more value to potential buyers at an open house.  Offering more to real estate buyers will net you more real estate leads.  I think this is a really informative post!  I plan on implementing some of these ideas in our open houses.  The bottom line is offering more value to buyer and sellers is better for you and your business and better for the clients you represent. Converting Leads After the Open House An agent asked me recently, "Denise, how do I convert leads from an open house?" Converting leads at an open house is easy because they already met you and I bet they developed some sort of rapport with you. Furthermore, they took the time to see a home so they probably are thinking about buying or selling. Therefore, your con...

Do I need to replace my windows? It’s a question that I’m asked a lot since I’m a real estate agent in Southwest Florida. When I work with first-time homebuyers, it’s also one of the Big 3 that I always suggest paying close attention to; the roof and the AC are the other 2 for our area. Windows are such a big part of your home, but fortunately, it’s not an upgrade you have to do every year. In fact, well-chosen windows can last up to 20 years. But if you’re seeing these warning signs, it’s probably time to consider an upgrade. You feel a draft running through your Southwest Florida homeOver time, windows shrink and change shape ever so slightly. They can lose their tight seal, either from not actually being closed completely or simply having the weather stripping start to break down. Ho...
