AI: Stanley Kubrick Knew All Along!

When I first learned AI was the topic of the ActiveRain June Challenge, which Kat Palmiotti had presented to bloggers, I began to reach back in memory, to when it was I had first became aware of Artificial Intelligence.  I remembered a special evening in 1968.  I was seated in a movie theater, munching on popcorn and watching the Stanley Kubrick/Arthur C. Clark film, “2001: A Space Odyssey.”  While viewing that now iconic old movie, I was introduced to Hal.  Hal (or HAL 9000) was a computer generated artificial intelligence character, who claimed to be “fool proof and incapable of error.”  The acronym for HAL is "Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer."

A couple days ago, while watching this flick once again, I was amazed, how close over 50 years ago, the authors got it to times we live today.

When we stop to think about it, AI has been with us a while.  When I have a question I don’t have an answer to, I pick up my cellphone, poke the little microphone, and say, “Google, when will our next full moon be?” - Or some other question. There’s Alexa, Ring Doorbell, facial recognition, also included in the growing list of AI generated functions increasingly used.

When I think of AI, I am excited about the possibilities, but also have concerns as well.  For example, I can see valuable applications for AI in healthcare, especially surgeries.  Several days ago, I was at a class reunion.  The son of one of my former classmates is involved in AI development.  She spoke about a surgery that was performed, on the east coast robotically, by a surgeon hundreds of miles away, remotely.  That kind of ability provides capability to having the best surgeons in the country doing our surgeries, not just those available in our community.

My concerns with AI come with its ability to process autonomously and act independently.  For the most part, AI gathers data which has been input by mere humans. AI digests the data, and then spits out results.  However, if AI were to become “creative” in a sense, and go rouge, like Hal in the movie, “2001: A Space Odyssey.”  I have concerns bad actors may have ability to input dangerous and inaccurate data, that AI could digest and spit out in significant consequential ways.  Just writing this post, Spellcheck has gotten into mischief. Sometimes Spellcheck is right. Sometimes it’s wrong.

In the future, because of AI, I have no doubt work environments, and career choices will evolve and change dramatically.  For example, lawyers may find their profession impacted.  Some say that might not be a bad thing.  We’ve already seen changes AI has created in the real estate arena, with algorithmic generated market evaluations, such as those provided with Zillow, etc.

We are on the threshold of interesting times, folks.  One thing for certain. . .Stanley Kubrick knew all along!

For those interested in viewing "2001: A Space Odyssey," it's available via Amazon Prime for a $3.99 rental fee.

Nina Hollander, Broker - Like you, I have my qualms about certain potential negative developments with AI.  For those who haven't seen the movie, "2001: A Space Odyssey," I would suggest doing so.  It becomes really interesting an hour into the movie, with the introduction of Hal.  The movie is available on Amazon Price currently.

George Souto - So true.  I'm reminded of Walt Disney's quote, "If you can dream it, you can do it."

Carol Williams - Like you, I have concerns about the direction AI could take.  We need to proceed with caution and care.

Myrl Jeffcoat I think my problem with movies is if they don't grab my attention right away I just fall asleep. I'll check it on Amazon. Thanks for the suggestion.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I have a little of that problem myself!  If you find the first part of the movie a little uncharted, fast forward about an hour into it.  That's where Hal is introduced.

The trend for facilitation of our lives with computers is frightening especially when on considers that was once thought to be science fiction is now reality.

Roy Kelley - You're very welcome!  I hope you and Dolores are having a pleasant weekend.

Ed Silva - You are very right when it comes to considering what we thought was science fiction, is now reality.  As an aside, there was a significant accident a couple blocks from my home this morning.  A Tesla drove through a cyclone fence and hit a tree.  The location is on a quiet residential street, not near any corner where turns would have been required.  Someone was either blasted out of their mind, or the AI in the Tesla wasn't working.

Hi Myrl.  I loved the Facebook entry and the selection of photos of yourself.  Loved them and so beautiful on each photo.  I do not see this post here on ActiveRain.  Have I missed it somehow?  It is too special not to be here in the RAIN.
And thank you for sharing the film:  '2001: A Space Odyssey.'  I have never seen it and definitely will be after reading your  post.

Myrl-I share your same concerns. I embrace technology and the benefits it has given us. My concern is two-fold- there will always be someone who can and will hack the system. And two...human thoughts and the behavior that comes from them often cannot be understood or controlled when they go awry.

So having a non-human develop human thoughts, processes, and even emotions could lead to something I don't want to think about.

this says it all for me...My concerns with AI come with its ability to process autonomously and act independently.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat - Great post!  This (2001 A Space Odyssey) was the first thing I thought of when I saw this challenge.  That movie had so many storylines, and we discussed it a lot back then.  I have the same concerns that you have about AI.

Hi, Myrl.

The other thought by Bill Gates and his book, "The Road Ahead," discusses the information highway (Internet) that came into our lives in the early 1980s.

Don't let fear hold us back from learning and embracing new experiences. Instead, take a proactive approach to expand our knowledge and adapt to the unfamiliar.

We stand on the edge of a new dawn, a revolutionary technological shift redefining how we live, work, learn, and connect. Embrace the change and seize its opportunities - the future is now!

Yes, I remember seeing that movie. It was groundbreaking and very popular. It was way ahead of its time.

Ever since the use of "alternative facts" and "fake news" made headlines, I have feared what kinds of conclusions AI would make. If we don't control the input, we'll never be able to control the output.

Congratulations on your feature- I remember seeing 2001: a Space odyssey when I was in high school - we missed the first 10 minutes because we got there late and I went through the entire movie thinking that if I had seen the first 10 min I would have understood the movie!

The amazing thing is Arthur C Clarke new before the film was produced in 1968 … I always remember astronaut Dave saying “open the pod bay doors, HAL”

I remember this movie as well. I was a young girl but it bothered me way back then. Spooky to think about predictive programming.

That is no doubt that the 2001 Space Odyssey, has shown us the future of what was to be or could become ... now, it seems technology is about AI ... oh boy!

Just wait as we move into a new financial system ... will change how we bank, how the banks will be more of a Wealth Mgmt services.

Myrl, at times I think our world is becoming very complex, and too difficult for many of our minds to navigate through safely.  I cannot wait to see the responses to the June Challenge.  Think I will leave that challenge to others, as right now I am still rethinking:
How many GALAXIES in the observable UNIVERSE?
ANSWER:  THERE ARE 200 BILLION to 2 TRILLION GALAXIES in the Universe....
as observed by our Earthly Telescopes.  And the Milky Way is just one of those galaxies.

You can trust me for all your real estate needs!

I'm pretty cynical about it...the power of profit over people has already reared it's ugly head only a few short years ago...COVID (cough cough) and I fear that profits over people will only lead to more integrated use of AI in the future and the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs for people.

Myrl Jeffcoat So glad to see this post Featured as it really shows how AI could have a negative impact if it was given too much control over our lives.

Myrl, yes Stanley Kubrick saw it coming for sure.  Made a lasting impression on me when I saw it years ago.  This scene in particular...
