Aldi Supermarket Opens In Flowood MS

Excitement has been swirling around the construction and Grand Opening of the new Aldi Supermarket on Lakeland Drive in Flowood.  Since today was Opening Day, I had to see what the buzz was all about. I brought my reusable grocery bags and a quarter for the shopping cart.

The parking lot was full when I arrived. I grabbed my cart and immediately was bumper to bumper with other shoppers. It seems everyone got the memo that today was Opening Day.

Aldi Supermarket Grand Opening

The store was full of friendly, smiling faces, but as I mentioned, shoppers and grocery carts were everywhere. If you couldn't go down the produce line, you went down the center isles, which is where the seasonal goods and "Aldi's Finds" are located. I went a little wild as I found gardening supplies at great prices.

Before I knew it, my cart was full so I headed to check out. Only one cashier line was open, and several self checkouts. I told the cashier I brought my own bags, but he politely explained that the customer has to bag their own groceries. OK, so I went to work bagging my $100 purchases.

Did I enjoy Aldi and would I go there again? Yes, I enjoyed their specials and definitely am happy with my gardening supplies. I am not a fan of bagging my own groceries, and definitely don't enjoy self-checkout. So I would go again, but I'm happy to have options like Kroger and Wal-Mart, each located within 5 minutes from home.

If you are new to Rankin County or are a long-time resident, you can add Aldi to your grocery store options, along with Kroger, Wal-Mart, and Ramey's in Brandon and Florence.

Hi Pat:

I bet there are plenty of locals who are thrilled to have the new Aldi! The one we have is not convenient to where we live so we don't ever go and I have only been in an Aldi store 1 time.

I saw a customer using the bagging area yesterday Ed Silva. I had no idea how the store operated as it was my first time to visit an Aldi store.

George Souto - so many people are excited to shop at Aldi. I will be glad when the newness wears off a little as it was THE place to be. Hopefully traffic will calm down in a couple weeks.

Jeff Dowler, CRS This Aldi is 5 minutes from home, so I'll be able to go frequently. By the way, this was my first time to visit Aldi. I do enjoy the special merchandise they use as teasers! :-)

Good morning, Pat... Aldi's has made serious inroads in the Charlotte region's grocery market. I shop there occasionally, but my heart still belongs more to LIDL... also a German chain... great German baked goods, chocolate, etc.

I've never been to an Aldis - you have to pay for shopping carts? Wow!

This is a good recommendation to share.

We like our local Aldi stores. We are lucky to have two of them in our area.

Hello Pat - I have yet to visit an Aldi store even though I have heard about them.  Thanks for sharing your experience which is similar to others I have heard/read.

Hi Kat Palmiotti - the shopping carts take a quarter to operate. There are no shopping corrals in the parking lot; so when you return the cart, you get your quarter back. You should have seen the confused shoppers on opening day!

Joan Cox - I had to look it up. The American headquarters are located in Illinois; they have 2000 stores nationwide.

Nina Hollander, Broker - I have not heard of LIDL; it is not in our area.

Hi Pat! I'm late to the Aldi party but, know you're loving having it in your area! We have both Lidl & Aldi (sister German companies, of sorts!) and a lot of shoppers prefer Aldi because of the variety of (and prices of) meats and cheeses - and those personal finds too!

We have 7 Aldis & 4 Lidls and I actually wish the Aldi was closer to me! LOL The Lidl that is closer to me often has good bulbs for planting in the garden though. You have to pick through them but, there are often some good finds there.

If you have a charcuterie board to take to an event or are hosting something at your home and you are putting together one - their meats and cheeses are FABULOUS and SO cheap!

I wasn't sure what to do about those shopping carts either! LOL

I love my full-service grocer but, for our lake gatherings, I'm all over Aldi!

OH another tip -  now when I go, it's often just for charcuterie items and I take my reusable bag in and fill it so I don't have to worry with a cart.
