Ask An Ambassador:  Beware The Siren Call of Comments! Attaboy!
Nice post!
Great information!
Bloggers are human (mostly....we've encountered a couple we wonder about).  We like praise.  No, most of us LOVE praise.  And as bloggers we've got to be careful not to be lured by the siren call of comments (and along the same line, the Pursuit of The Gold Star!).  It's easy to get distracted from our true blogging purpose because that path can be a lonely road with few comments.  It's the nature of posting pure real estate themed topics.  Comments will be almost non-existent, because for the … (61 comments)

ASK AN AMBASSADOR:  What's The Difference Between Members Only and Public Posts?

Well the first was a really popular jacket during the '80s...oh wait, wrong Members Only!  For the purposes of blogging, you have two choices as to posting status when publishing your blog post:  Members Only & Public.
Now if you haven't gotten a Rainmaker account, then the choice is easy because you don't have one.  ALL your posts go Members Only.  So who can see your posts?  ONLY Active Rain members.  Your posts are staying in-house, and you don't need to worry about Google and SEO and all … (36 comments)

Ask An Ambassador:  10 Active Rain No No's To Avoid!
When you first start out in Active Rain, there's plenty of opportunity to learn from Active Rain University, other bloggers, etc.  But some things may not get expressed clearly and early, so here's a collection of tips to avoid trouble in the Rain!
1.  Don't comment without reading the post.  The WHOLE post.  If you want to show people you're just about the comment points, leave a comment that indicates you didn't bother reading the post.  While you got your 25 points, leaving a "Hope you sell your listing soon" … (95 comments)

ask an ambassador: Ask An Ambassador: Does The Tone Of My Blog Matter? - 06/11/13 12:40 AM
Ask An Ambassador:  Does The Tone Of My Blog Matter?
In a nutshell, we'd say "YES!".  The tone and topic choice of your blog is either going to engage consumers and other Active Rainers, or discourage them from spending time with you.
Now from a practical standpoint, most consumers will find you as the result of a search engine query and go directly to ONE blog post.  If that post provides them the info they need, they probably don't search any further on your blog.  They either call you, or they don't.
Now your interaction with other Rainers is totally … (52 comments)

ask an ambassador: Ask An Ambassador: Should I Be Intimidated By Blogging? - 06/03/13 11:55 PM
Ask An Ambassador:  Should I Be Intimidated By Blogging? No!  That's the REALLY short answer!  Now why do we think that?
There's probably a host of things that make you nervous before making that first comment and that first blog post.  Things that seem straight out of our days as kids!
Will the other bloggers think I'm stupid? Will I embarass myself? I don't know HOW to write! What will I write about? Will the "cool" bloggers accept me? Wow some of those bloggers have a LOT of points!!! What we can say is this.  The more you comment and the … (33 comments)

ask an ambassador: ASK AN AMBASSADOR: How Long Before Blogging Brings Me Business? - 05/27/13 10:56 PM
ASK AN AMBASSADOR:  How Long Before Blogging Brings Me Business?
"It depends".  But chances are the speed to that first phone call may be a bit slower than you want because by nature we're in a "I want/need it NOW!" business, but there are multiple variables that will impact how long it takes to get new business from blogging.
We're going to start off with "You're a Rainmaker, right??".  Without that status, all the writing in the world to the consumers does you no good unless your local home buyers & sellers join Active Rain to find your work.  You can … (82 comments)

ASK AN AMBASSADOR:  Should I Write About Local Events & Places?
As a new blogger, often one of the toughest struggles is finding a topic to write about, and their are many paths to follow when blogging.  You could just do nothing but new listings, open houses, subdivisions and the like, and probably be quite successful getting your phone call to ring.
Personally, we prefer more variety in our topic selection.  Variety keeps our interest and prevents blogging from being WORK, and more something that we can enjoy, even when it's a daily task.
And a really fertile field for post … (43 comments)

ask an ambassador: ASK AN AMBASSADOR: How Do I Get A Feature Post? - 04/09/13 04:03 AM
ASK AN AMBASSADOR:  How Do I Get A Feature Post?
The question comes up all the time.  How do I get that coveted Gold Star?  Or just as often the WHY do the same old, same old people get the Gold Star?.
Yes, we know, we're some of the same old, same old people that get the Gold Star.  And while we can't claim to know all the ins and outs of what makes the Feature Fairy wave the wand at one post and not another, there's some things to know that may either help you understand the how … (47 comments)

ask an ambassador: Ask An Ambassador: Why Isn't My Blog Making My Phone Ring? - 04/01/13 11:21 PM
Ask An Ambassador:  Why Isn't My Blog Making My Phone Ring?
There are two primary camps of bloggers in the Rain:  those just here to have fun, and those blogging for business.  MOST of us fall into the 2nd group, and it's not uncommon for us to read blog posts or see comments where the writer expresses an opinion that blogging doesn't work for them.  Now this might seem kind of harsh, but we know that blogging CAN work to build your business, so what that leaves is an issue between the seat and the keyboard OR in your local market … (84 comments)

ask an ambassador: ASK AN AMBASSADOR: What Are All Those Things Under A Commenter's Picture? - 03/19/13 05:03 AM
ASK AN AMBASSADOR:  What Are All Those Things Under A Commenter's Picture?
Q:  "What are all those things under a commenter's photo?"
A:  They're Active Rain's version of those badges you used to earn back in the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.  But instead of a First Aid or Camping badge, you get badges for point milestones or successfully suggesting Feature posts. And some of these badges can no longer be earned because the supporting activities have been retired.

So what do those badges above mean?
Point badge:  You get your first one at 100,000 points.  Every 100,000 points … (23 comments)
