Ask An Ambassador: 10 Tips To Increase Comments

It's natural to want some validation.  You spent time writing your post, now you want to know that people actually read your post, and what better way to have proof than a comment???

If you're new to the community, you'll find many members fall into one of several groups:

1.  The Reciprocators.  You leave a comment on their post and 99.99% of the time they'll visit your post and leave a comment.  Some of them even have Excel spreadsheets to make sure they don't miss anyone :)

2.  Comments Disabled.  Maybe literally.  No comments are able to be left on their posts, or if you leave a comment, they will 100% NEVER acknowledge that comment or comment on one of your posts.  They're strictly here to publish.  The End.

3.  The Responders.  They'll respond to every comment on their own posts, but don't look for them to comment outside of their own posts.

Each of us has our own reasons for being here, some for business, some for social, some for a mix of purposes.

Personally, I'm an introvert, kind of busy with more than a few hats to wear, and while not completely anti-social, being with people (even people I like a lot) drains my batteries pretty quickly.  So while I'd love to spend more time in the Rain reading and leaving comments, I've had to change over the years in how I spend my time.

So for me, I'm in "the Responders" category.  You visit my post and leave a comment and I'll respond.  But I feel zero obligation to leave another comment on your post and nor do I expect you to ever leave a comment on my post just because I visited yours.  No intent to offend anyone, but that's the reality of how I work presently.  The days of when I could leave 20-30 comments a day are long gone and I don't expect them to return.

But if getting comments are important to you, what can you do to increase your comment counts?

1.  Get out and comment elsewhere.  You'll find out who The Reciprocators are and you can cultivate a relationship with them.

2.  Learn how to stage your posts.  Aesthetics matter.  Decent font size, some photos, enough white space, etc.

3.  Use a title that makes you stand out on the blog roll.

4.  Write about things that engage people, but keep in mind some topics might not be worth the engagement.  E.g, double edged sword, politics ENGAGES people, but maybe not the kind of engagement you (OR YOUR BROKER) would want.

5. Understand that certain topics are NOT good for comments, but they can REALLY help your business!  Home buyers and sellers rarely leave a comment, but they WILL call, email, or fill out the contact form if they want your help.

6.  Blog frequently enough for people to actually start to recognize you.

7.  Play nice in the sandbox if you want return visits.

8.  Follow other members, chances are some will then follow you.

9.   Leave non-generic comments, comments that let the blogger know you actually read their post!

10.  Ask a question at the end of your post!  e.g.  Got other tips for increasing comments?

These are all excellent ways to increase the comments on posts.

Question:

Is there a polite way to educate or, at least, to let the drive-by/robo commenters know how useless and counterproductive they are?  Of course, everyone recognizes them, but again, maybe there is a way we can help make the site and blogging better.

Maybe we could develop a standard response or a link to another post regarding how their meaningless comments come across.  It may be that some need to be educated.  I would welcome your thoughts, Liz and Bill Spear

Margaret, that exact scenario is why I miss management presence (a la Bob & Kerrie days) to point those things out and let them address.  I'd agree, for newer members, it may just be a matter of education.  For others, I think it's all about the points and nothing but.  They're willing to sacrifice referrals, personal relationships and their profession reputation amongst their peers just to be a few points higher on the Leaderboard.  Personally, if there was an ActiveRain algorithm that ran and compared the day's comments and saw 10 of them the same, and docked the points automatically, I think a lot of it would stop.

Hi Bill- over the years, I've definitely changed how I blog and comment. When I started, I remember reading how some people would only make a set number of comments per day because they would not receive points for any comments over "X" per day.

I do try to reciprocate but don't every single time. I also understand that some people are busier than I am so don't play tit for tat if they don't comment or respond to my comments on their posts.

If someone wants comments on their posts, the best way is to engage with others here.

I'd love to have more time to read and interact, and maybe I will after we move to the mountain (whenever that might be), but until recently the engineering job was short staffed, so it was nights and weekends just trying to keep up with that.  Add in the zoo continuing to grow (and another catio to build), and more real estate activity, and more side stuff that I do, and something had to give.

I've not understood the intensity that some have for points.  I won't do X unless I get points.  The initial idea was points as a carrot to get us to do the right thing, learn those habits, and then continue them with or without points.  Points don't make my phone ring.  Relationships built on the other hand do.

Good evening Bill,

Great list of suggestions to increase comments but I love your idea of having an Active Rain algorithm that ran and compared the day's comments and saw 10 of them the same, and docked the points automatically! I'm sure it would bring a halt to the drive by, serial commenter, just trying to accrue points.

It might take a supercomputer to run that check, but it would be so worth it to get people back to the intent of the site.

These are really good tips!  I am fine with not receiving a lot of comments though since that means fewer comments I have to respond to, haha.

Hi Liz:

Just wanted to say that yours is a very insightful post--thank you! It's been a very good move for my business to consult with the wise folks from ActiveRain (particularly you). Such a supportive community! :) Miriam

Miriam, one of the great things about this community is the willingness to share.  We've each been given gifts of knowledge by other members, so paying that forward just seems the right thing to do.

Hi Bill,
I find #5 and #9 particularly true. When I was an active agent, I blogged daily and received few comments but got 75% of my business from my blogs and website. If you write for your audience, they will come.  And, if you're going to bother commenting, make it relevant to the post.

Jun 21, 2023 08:42 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

Until switching to AAA posts, most of my blog posts were consumer facing.  Not many phone calls, but to this day those posts and IDX pages I created are still making my phone ring.

And not reading a post before commenting can create some serious faux pas.  Once wrote a post about my brother-in-law's brain tumor fight, and used a picture of a house as the main photo.  A commenter congratulated us on our new listing.  Majorly inserted foot in mouth with that one.

Wow, Liz and Bill Spear
Foot in mouth for sure. I get a kick out of those who tell me to "sell a house" when I've been retired for 12 years and my profile clearly indicates that.

A moving experience!

I'm a "none of the above".  I read those posts that I find interesting, and I only comment when I have something to add, or something to say.  Sometimes there have been enough comments before me that have already said what I was going to say, so I don't really need to say it.  If it's important enough, sometimes I'll reiterate it.  (sometimes not).

But now and then I like to put my own spin on it. I'm not one of those that believes in "you left a comment on my post, so I'll leave a comment on yours"... but it might cause me to visit your post.  That's a start.

Jun 21, 2023 09:33 AM

I think we operate in a similar fashion.  In the Q&A section, I'm not inclined to repeat the same answer, especially if the question is more of a How To.  If I can't be the first to provide the "right" answer, I don't see the point in repeating.

Personally, I don't think you are an introvert.  We have chatted in the past and I read and appreciate your comments even if I don't always respond via comment.  I am  not in the crowd  that responds if I don't have something to say of value

I'm definitely an introvert, and online presence is easier for me than face to face.  Face to face outside of my normal work environments typically drains my battery :)

I love #9 in ways to get comments: When you comment, let the blogger know you actually read their post!

Reading a comment from someone who did NOT read the post is an absolute turn-off. I would never go visit someone who commented but obviously did not read my post.

Jun 22, 2023 09:08 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

Marte, to be honest I find it a bit insulting when it's blatantly obvious the post wasn't read by the commenter.  If you want to copy/paste, hit the market reports where it's likely the author isn't even reading the comments and a generic comment won't be as obvious.

Thanks, Liz and Bill Spear. Excellent advice!

Now if I would just post some blogs, I would be able to see what happens. Actually, I already know what happens because I have seen the visits and comments on my few blogs and I have seen responses on some of the comments that I have made on others posts.

Oh, as you know, like you, I'm hit or miss! I am 'pretty good' at responding to comments on my posts but, try as I may, have one heck of a time reciprocating to everyone. I would LOVE to be able to do that but, if I did, it would mean I'm not selling much real estate!! Back in the day, we had tons of time to reciprocate and I believe we both were very good at it.

I also highly recommend #9! I see some comment on the title only and the title is a spin off of the actual article - so NOTHING to do with the content.

As well, with the AI posts, I noticed that people would get their dander up at the first paragraph and leave a hateful comment, not reading the disclosure at the end, stating that the post was submitted as a joke or play on words for a challenge.

Another great A-an-A post, Bill!

Jul 05, 2023 03:12 PM

I'll usually respond to a comment on my own posts, but if someone comes back a week or two after posting I might miss it.

Reciprocating is absolutely hopeless for me to pretend I'd be able to do.  Every aspect of my life expanded, so something had to give and commenting had to be it unless I was willing to let some other things go.

One of my all time favorites for people not reading a post before commenting was Greg Nino's 10 million dollar listing post, with a clear "just a joke" statement at the end.  Hook, line & sinker for many congratulating him on his listing :)
