Ask An Ambassador: Here Be Dragons!

Rumor has it that old mapmakers used to put the phrase "Here be dragons!" as a warning for unknown sections of the world.  Often, what we don't know, we fear, and there's still much we don't know.

Some fears are legitimate.  If you've been in this business any length of time you've heard the stories.  Not every day ends well for those in the real estate profession as there are bad people with bad intent out there.  You need to mitigate the risks and protect your well-being.

Other things can cause some anxiety, but with time and practice you can develop a proficiency that makes what was initially a challenge one of the easier things you'll do that day.

For example, writing your first blog post can be intimidating.

Will it be found?

Will people read it?

Will they comment?

Will it help my business?

There's a lot of questions you could ask, but if you're going to start off blogging about real estate, I've yet to find a more welcoming community than ActiveRain.

While it's not the old days with staff visible in the community offering guidance and training, the community members have assumed much of that management and advisor role.

Tuesday Zoom meetings offer boots on the ground knowledge about how to succeed.

Post a question in the Q&A section and you'll get responses that MAY offer you the exact insight you need.

Scroll the blog roll and groups and you'll find plenty of tip posts that can shorten your learning curve.

Click on the contact form, email, text or call, and there are people here that will take time out of their schedule to provide answers from their experience.

Bit by bit, you can gain the knowledge you need to gain clients, build your referral network, and get insight into other real estate markets and better understand your own.

Pretty soon, the "here be dragons" will be replaced by "I got this!".

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Bill & Liz aka BLiz

I had to scroll down to see if ActiveRain University still had a presence but alas it got lost in the shuffle. There are a lot of ways to get help, here, all one has to do is ask, or even just blog about it.

I still see it on the site map, but a "where did I leave my keys" when I click on it.  Without a Bob/Kerrie type running the show, our Tuesday Zooms are probably the next closest thing.

Bill- There's so much to learn here if you are willing to read! (Or watch videos) The Q&A has turned out to be a good tool too!!!  One of the best parts of this community is the community itself...always willing to help

As I mentioned earlier  - that is one very cool shot!  Amazing shot!!  And love this post Bill.  I just happened to have lunch with a gal I've known for years.  She's been in the biz 10 years longer than me - and oh the stories we shared.  It's quite interesting to go back in time and remember all that 'old' stuff. Which honestly is kind of the same stuff as agents are still grappling with how to shift, change and adapt.

The fundamentals are still there, how we obtain and present data may have changed, the tools we use may have changed, but some things such as communication just don't go out of style.  The agents that understand and adapt will do well.

Bill it's interesting to go back years ago and see 'some things never change - the fundamentals that build success for sure.

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - whether it be everyday life, more than a few first-time encounters in real estate or entering the blogosphere, there are moments where the unknown is present.  Possible fear, anticipation and all kinds of emotions may be a part of the scene.  We face them as best we can while continuing to learn.

Adding to previous comments, the image captured in this post is eye-catching.

We make the best decision we can with the available information, then change paths as needed as new information confirms or denies our original assumptions.
And I love capturing some photographic moments, although I have no desire to get into the complications of serious camera rigs :)

Hi Bill,
Your post reminded me of the saying, "Too many Chiefs and not enough Indians".  I hope that's not considered racist. It's only meant to make a point. In AR's case, we don't have enough Chiefs so the Indians have stepped up to run the reservation.

Or, you could say the inmates are running the asylum.  In any case, it goes beyond real estate. I reached out to the community a couple of weeks go about finding contacts for doll collectors. The community came through, which was no surprise. With few exceptions, we all want to help in any way we can.

Liz and Bill Spear

The good thing is there are enough people that care about this community and maintaining the culture that people step up and fill roles that would ideally be paid Staff roles.  Instead, we have members running the monthly contests, hosting Zooms, instructing, writing posts that would have been the domain of AR University, etc. to keep the community on track.

I'm glad the community was able to come through with the doll collector contacts.  This community has a wide range of knowledge and diverse interests, so no surprise when they're able to come up with something that for off the beaten track questions.

When we look around we have a million things to be scared of...it we let them scare us.

I believe in being aware of the risks of our lives, taking prudent actions, but not letting fear dictate how we live.  For our next house, I want to be prepared for power outages (so we'll have solar panels & batteries & propane back up generator), disruptions to food (planning to have a significant veggie/fruit garden that will take time to build up), etc.   We're not preppers per se, but there are some good things to consider from that community.

Yes, the photo is fascinating. Yes, the phrase is captivating. But most importantly, yes, there is much to be found to settle the uneasiness if you'll look around in the Rain. So much to be discovered. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.

Bill:

The Dragons analogy is certainly appropriate for those entering the blogging world. But there are several ways to chase those dragons away as you pointed out - the Q and A section, and Zoom meetings, are a great source of learning, as are the posts shared daily by members, and engaging with others through commenting.

That photo is pretty amazing and certainly captures the reader's attention, as it was no doubt intended to do.
