Ask An Ambassador: Why Do You Blog?

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.LizTour.com SAL.2002007747

There's an entire spectrum of reasons to blog, ranging from purely social to purely business.

A quick scroll through ActiveRain's blog roll and it's easy to see the variety of motivations for blogging.

We each find a personal reason to start blogging.  What you may find is the reason you started blogging and the reason you continue to blog (or even decide to stop) may change over time.

When I first started blogging on ActiveRain I had a shotgun approach.  As much as I could type and any pretty much any topic was fair game.  Comments were good.  Getting featured was a rush.  And watching points accumulate and moving up the Leaderboard pushed me to really get the blogging habit ingrained (the folks that founded this community understood how competitive typical real estate agents are!).

But frankly, my initial blogging was much ado about nothing.  Those posts didn't generate business because I wasn't giving consumers reasons to find us or reach out to us.  Business was still gained thanks to developing relationships with others in this community and receiving and giving referrals, but home buyers and sellers weren't exactly filling our Inbox with requests for help.

But one of the chief blessings of this community is the Pay It Forward culture.  Others shared what worked for them and stubbornly I began to get more focused on posting information that might actually get results.  And over time, we did start seeing success.

Flash forward some more and again thanks to things learned from this community, we set up our Wordpress site with IDX capability.  A couple of hundred subdivision and specialty search pages later, we had a lot of digital breadcrumbs out there.

We learned what worked for us, and what didn't, and pruned the pages that weren't given us the desired customers.  And that's part of the beauty of blogging, you can target your ideal customer.

Do you want to work above or below the average price for your market?

Do you want to have a niche?

Do you want to focus on buyers or sellers?

Understanding your best fit for your preferences and finding the consumers that match can really give you a reason to blog, and to blog selectively to reach your target audience.

But when it comes to why you blog, you still have to ask yourself is it the best use of your time?

I could still blog daily if I chose to.  The fundamentals are still in place, there's no shortage of topics once you know how to tune in and convert what you see and do into posts, but for me personally, there reached a point where blogging daily stopped making sense.  Evergreen content was key to providing the freedom to blog, or not to blog as I choose.

So the WHY for why I blog today is much different then why I blogged in years past.  A bit of Pay It Forward to pay it back for what others shared with me.

Find your Why.

Bill, I've found that blogging along with doing other things (Google My Business as one example) gives a better digital footprint and some matches for "near me" type searches.

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - countless reasons and perhaps even more examples of this (and that too).  And just when you think of something "new" - you can see/read an interpretation that seems a bit different.

Good evening Bill,

You like many of us starting blogging and learned what works and what doesn't and our "Why". That is an excellent question to ask ourselves. I figured out targeting my community audience made the difference in securing my dominant listing position in the hood!

Blogging is still a powerful tool for those that know how to use it and are willing to put in the work.  I don't know how anyone would look for information on Canyon Creek and not find you!

Hi Bill- very well said. When I began my blogging journey years ago, it was to market my business. Not only did I learn about blogging and real estate but I gained a Virtual family some of whom I've had the opportunity to meet. Today, it's about continuing to learn.

My main purpose for posting is to share valuable information with others, but I also have a deep appreciation for the art of discussion. I believe that there is a unique power in the way that people can exchange ideas and perspectives, and I am always eager to contribute to these conversations in a meaningful way. Whether it's through sharing my own experiences or learning from others, I believe that every discussion has the potential to bring people closer together and help us all grow as individuals.

I'd agree that there's always the potential, but from what I've seen of some folks (especially when politics gets involved) that there's virtually zero chance of having an engagement that would change any minds.  Whereas since this community keeps the focus on real estate, there's a lot to be gained.

As one clarifies one's target market and reviews how each potential client is secured along with one's marketing goals both long term and short term, changes not only blogging but other marketing activities to attract attention and begin to build the relationship.

Over the years we've pivoted from marketing that wasn't as effective as we wanted.  What worked well for a long time might sputter out over time because of market shifts, more online vs. direct mail, etc.

Bill it truly is about the WHY we blog.  Today  my why, like yours, is totally different in comparison to when we all first started here. And it changed many times over the years. Makes me smile thinking of what an amazing journey it's been - on so many levels.  And still is!!

Knowing our "why" for everything we do keeps us on OUR right path. My reason for blogging could be totally different than someone else's ("could be" should just be "is"). And it's all good!

Right now I'm in a different phase where these Tuesday posts are my main blogging focus.  I've needed the time I used to invest daily in blogging to take care of other demands (the furry herd got bigger, more beehives, etc.).

Liz and Bill Spear I enjoy blogging and it gives me reasons to research data and share.  One thing I wish was an option is to take a class on how to reset and start blogging with a purpose and formatting it better.

Jim, the old ActiveRain University (once upon a time) or classes from Bob Stewart would have been helpful for exactly that purpose.

There is a correlation between my blogging and my payday. When I blog about real estate, there's generally a payoff. When I blog about local "events," not so much. And I think a lot of it is immersing yourself in the business, too. Like attracting like?

The nice thing I find about blogging the way I do, is it is like attracting like.  A get my fair share of data driven clients who don't do drama :)

As Dorie Dillard Austin TX said, it really is all about the 'why.' For me, I post market reports to send the link to my clients in those communities - AND to hopefully gain attention from John Q when searching for those particular subdivisions. I post recipes on occasion (even though, it's REALLY not real estate related!) for 'fun' and to, hopefully help others enjoy 'healthy' eating - we're not getting any older! And, I post photos/'diary' posts to help build relationships here, as well as letting John Q get to know me.

All of that said, I am still not sure any new posts are actually gaining traction. I have grown to depend upon those evergreen posts we learned together, LONG AGO, that target those 'icing-on-the-cake' Google searching buyers & sellers!

And, I remember those IDX group meetings. We REALLY need to resume those. That was SO much fun!

Love your post, Bill - and the discussion that spawned from it.

Over time, those evergreen IDX search pages became our bread and butter for attracting new clients.  I could use to make more of those pages.

As far as AR SEO, I can't really speak to that.  I know my old posts still get found, but since I've only posted AAA posts for about the last 3 years and nothing consumer facing, I don't know if they'd still work well or not.

You've got a steady audience, including repeat clients, so having a mix of topics would serve you well.  Because most of our clients are buying their last home, they've not looking to follow our blog once they've made their purchase.

Jul 27, 2023 08:22 PM

Interesting, Liz and Bill Spear - I hadn't thought of your clients' 'next move.' They may, however, still care about the current market report for their community. Those 55+ clients still want to be sure they build strong equity as the retirement homes are NOT cheap!!

For me blogging is a challenge.  And the why in it for me is to get over my fear that what I have to say is not worth reading.  Now I'm not trying to throw in a negative here, but it really is a challenge.  Every blog seems to take me way more time that I originally allotted to the task, and yet when I have completed it, I feel I have accomplished something and have moved up another rung of the ladder.  It's people like YOU that have given me so much encouragement.  And I will continue to work toward my goal!
