Changing direction

I like this photo above for two reasons.

1) When in a river it is always a better idea to go with the flow than fighting the current.

2) Even going with the flow you have some control.

This past year has seen many changes in my life, getting remarried, moving to a new location some way from where I have lived and worked for many years.

I set myself some directions to work this year, some of that was based on the past, and some on directions being encouraged by leadership in my company, which was a lot of direct mail.

It is always good to take a moment to consider where you are going, even when flowing down the river. I realized for the past month, I have felt like I was going up river, not down. Everything felt like a struggle. I was feeling burnt out, and discouraged.

Some of that is very much due to this market, but a lot was due to how I was choosing to market myself this past year. I realized that the methods being proposed by my leadership, do not gel with me. They make me feel tired and discouraged. I was also not seeing any results from them and did not feel like I wanted to carry on using these methods.

As you know, I am used to walking and being present in the moment, in touch with me. I do not like being someone else and I was feeling that I was drifting away from who I am. I realized I needed to change the direction of my raft/canoe and start enjoying what I am doing again.

So, even as I am getting ready for double knee replacement surgery in September, I am moving back to blogging about real estate more, using questions I know clients have. I am going to use more video to answer these and to point out great places near and around me. I am moving away from the high levels of direct mail, whilst staying in touch with clients through email newsletters.

Just writing this down I feel energized, more than I have been for the last month. Thank you to all those in AR who are such an encouragement always with all your various posts on all sorts of subjects, I really appreciate you all.

Phew, that's a lot going on. Going WITH the flow reminds me of an investing truism: "follow the trend, until the end." If it isn't working, pivot. Life is nice that way as there's nothing saying we can't change course on a dime. Very poignant - thanks for this essay and all the best with your knees!

Wonderful post, Nick. You walked the Camino to rediscover yourself so I'm glad you're rethinking your marketing and being YOU and doing what works for you!!!  I also admire your being an ongoing work in progress...not content to settle.

Best of luck with your knee surgery. Keep us informed of that journey as well.

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

First off, we appreciate YOU, Nick! I love the energy you bring and can't wait to send a client your way as I know we operate very similarly and you will make them feel so special and do a fabulous job for them.

That said, you know you better than ANYONE and if what you are doing doesn't feel right, do what DOES. You are seasoned and knowledgeable and I have no doubt that you will be selling real estate from your hospital bed when you have both knees replaced! You are a rockstar - embrace that and keep that energized feeling going!

BTW, my BFF's hubby had bilateral knee replacements several years ago. He sailed right through it. Being a former nurse, I ask him occasionally how his knees are doing. He always says, "Hey, I did EVERYTHING the doctor and my physical therapist told me to do so, my knees are still rockin'!" Also being a former nurse, I can tell you, I GAVE him that advice and because he heeded it, he's still 'rockin' those new knees 10 years later!! 😉

Bone on bone knee pain times two, lack of mobility can bring you down Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 . If you feel burned out, spell relief V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N with the new mate. But don't advise white water rafting a class 5 river with rapids. (Both sons white water river guides... I'm in back of raft on right following his instructions to a "T" thru Maine's Penobscot River rapids.)

Eileen Burns always happy trails, best place to be is out in nature.

Leanne Smith we need to be who we are, not every peg is round, some are square we have to find what sits right.

Anna Banana Kruchten Phoenix Broker my doctor actually said doing both at the same time gives a better result, it is only the first 4-6 weeks that are hard.

Carol Williams much easier being ourselves than someone we are not.

Nina Hollander, Broker very true, just making the decision has made me feel better in myself.

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint-Idaho I am sure I will arrive where I am aiming for, the route may change, but not the destination.

Bill Salvatore - East Valley thanks for commenting.

Jeff Dowler, CRS my doctor said doing both at the same time gives a better result, although hard for the first 4-6 weeks. But I have a vacation planned for November, so can enjoy that with new knees.

Joan Cox thank you for being honest and open, it is good to know I am not the only one struggling.

John Wieland thanks for the encouragement.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX thank you, I appreciate the encouragement.

Kathy Streib I am always working to improve myself every day, thanks for the encouragement much appreciated.

Dr. Paula McDonald thanks for the best wishes.

Debe Maxwell, CRS thank you, I am always willing to try something I have not done before, but when it doesn't feel right, or is not showing results than I need to go back to what I think is right. I need the surgery, bone on bone in both knees and a cyst in one too, I think I am feeling more pain now as I am focused on getting strong before the operation and doing a lot of walking so feel the pain more, but will enjoy the pain free, eventually after, also have a nice vacation river cruise planned as well afterwards.

You will SO enjoy the pain-free, Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 and I'm sure that river cruise is going to contribute significantly to that pain-free state! 😉

Brian England that is an interesting comment, we will have to talk soon.

Andrew Mooers | 207.532.6573 that is an exciting shot, whilst I do have a river cruise planned after the operation it doesn't include any rapids.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543  I am all about change when I am in control, I find change debilitating when someone else brings it on.... Personally I would not be mentally or emotionally or physically ready to do what you are about to do.... not a fan of surgeons or doctors in general... now with that said wishing you the best and hopefully a successful outcome.... as to Real Estate not a fan of videos either... I prefer in writing emails or posts, Endre

Endre Barath, Jr. when I started doing videos several years ago, I was not a fan, I felt very wooden and stiff, but with experience I have relaxed, I try to take the video off of me by interviewing others or focusing away from myself.
