Newtown Square, PA is a charming and welcoming town located in Delaware County, just west of Philadelphia. It is a fantastic place to live and work. The town is home to many amenities, including top-notch schools, beautiful parks, and a wide variety of shops and restaurants. In this blog post, we'll explore what it's like to live in Newtown Square and why we love it so much!

Location and Accessibility

One of the main advantages of living in Newtown Square is its location. The town is located in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, just a short drive away from the city, and an even shorter drive to Philadelphia airport. It is also conveniently located near major highways such as the PA Turnpike, I-476, and I-95. This makes it easy for residents to commute to work, school, or to explore nearby towns and cities. In about 2 hours or less, residents can easily get to Wilmington, Delaware, Baltimore, MD, and New York, and more.

Education

Newtown Square is served by the Marple Newtown School District, which includes four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The district is highly rated by niche.com and is well-known for extracurricular activities and athletic programs. Additionally, there are several private schools in the area, like Episcopal Academy and Delaware County Christian School, to name a few. The many options provide families with a wide range of educational opportunities.

Recreation

Newtown Square has several beautiful parks and recreational areas for residents to enjoy. The most notable is Ridley Creek State Park, which offers over 2,600 acres of scenic hiking trails, fishing, picnicking, and camping. The park is also home to the historic Hunting Hill Mansion, an English Tudor style mansion, which offers tours and special events throughout the year. Check out Parque for more information. If you're looking for something less active, a personal favorite is the picturesque drive west on Goshen Road, where you will pass the red Bartram Covered Bridge on your way to horse farms and idyllic rolling hills just west of the center of town. The town also has several sports fields, playgrounds, and community centers for residents of all ages.

Historical Significance

Newtown Square is historically significant for several reasons. Founded by William Penn as one of 2 inland “new towns”, it was first settled in the late 1600s and was an important crossroads community during the colonial era. (The other “new town”, aptly named Newtown, is located about an hour north in nearby Bucks County). During the Colonial era, Newtown Square served as a hub for trade and commerce. Several important battles of the Revolutionary War took place nearby. Additionally, Newtown Square was a major center of the early American Quaker movement, with several Quaker meeting houses and schools established in the area. Today, visitors can explore several historic sites and landmarks, including the Square Tavern, which was built in 1742, and the Paper Mill House, built in 1828. Check out the Newtown Square Historical Society for more information about these sites and tour times.

Shopping and Dining

Newtown Square has a great selection of local shops and restaurants, offering residents a wide range of choices. For shopping, the town has several grocery stores, including a Whole Foods which was newly constructed and opened in 2019. There are also several local shops offering unique items such as jewelry, clothing, and home goods. For dining, residents can choose from a variety of options, including Italian, Mexican, Asian, and American cuisine. Some popular restaurants in the area include Nifty Fifty's, a 50's themed burger and shake joint; Tiffin, an Indian cuisine franchise; and upscale Firepoint Grill, which features a covered patio outdoor seating area.

Community

Finally, one of the most significant benefits of living in Newtown Square is its strong sense of community. The town hosts several annual events, including a Fourth of July parade and fireworks, a Fall Festival, and a Christmas Tree Lighting in Saint Alban's Circle. There are also several community organizations and volunteer opportunities for residents to get involved in.

Newtown Square is a fantastic place to call home. With its convenient location, excellent schools, beautiful parks, great shopping and dining, and strong sense of community, it's easy to see why so many people choose to live here.
