Experiencing Change. . .

Recently, Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! wrote a post about lost skills.

She covered more than a few with her excellent list.  As sad and unfortunate as it was, the points she made were right on the money in my ophion.

The last one mentioned on her list was in evidence when I went to a store this week.  Change is obviously not easy. And it certainly appears that counting back change in a retail setting made a getaway a long time ago in the cashier training manual.

Yes, it continues to be a pet peeve of mine.  Without going into the unfortunate details, evidence was clearly on display.

Recalling simple customer service skills, I wondered about words of wisdom on the subject of change. You see, Wanda’s post put me on a pondering path.

Previously unknown to me, the following quote seems to fit in countless ways.  Hopefully, you will appreciate it even if it evolves in a different direction than the topic:

Change is tough,

people don’t like it,

but it is necessary.

Take two aspirins

and call me in the morning.

Nobody likes change except a baby in dirty diapers!!! Thanks for sharing Michael...

Sham Reddy CRS - the diaper remark in your comment offers an unmistakable sensory experience.  Thank you for "dropping by" today.

You mention customer service and that surely went out the window a long time ago as well.  I don't like dealing with anything corporate since the worst customer service or lack thereof usually comes from a corporate entity.

Brian England - while examples of exceptional customer service may be rare, I think that's likely truer for many sorts of people whenever hindsight is raised.  Remembering the "old good days" seems to forget "history".    As for "change" in the distribution of dollars and cents in a transaction, it's an old pet peeve of mine.

Michael,  Occasionally, despite our efforts to steer clear of subpar service, we find ourselves unable to avoid it. And, the quote makes sense to me!

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 - I also attempt to avoid such transactions but this was unavoidable.  There were soooo many quotes about change - these words registered with me.

Good morning Michael. My father never had a credit card so cashews the way to go. I paid cash for many years, carried a pocket full of change and numerous bills. It all changed when cashiers could not count. Now I use a credit card for everything and never carry any change. That's my contribution to change. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin - I know many who don't carry any loose change.  Hope your Friday is a good one.

Good morning Michael Jacobs ,

I couldn't agree more with you that this is a skill set that has been abandon and taken out of the training manual for all retail employees. They don't want you to use cash and want you to use a credit card (even though the credit company is charging the retailer 4% on the charge!) I find it annoying too and can say it is a pet peeve of mind. It may be easier for the employee to have you swipe but as usual the brain power is dumbed down. Thinking skills do not come in to play. Love the quote!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - as the transaction ended, I walked away.  There was certainly sadness in the situation.  And absurdity of it all was apparent.  Meanwhile, I moved on.  But many reminders remain.  I am grateful that I learned to count back change.  And other elements of evolution even though it often means reliving this kind of scene over and over.

Michael, there are so many skills that have been lost over the years, especially counting change back.  The young ones have no idea!

Joan Cox - although it may seem like a "new" phenonmenon, I have noticed it for a years.  In fact, one memorable experience for me was decades ago.  I am quite familiar with this particular pet peeve.

Michael- I love it when you go on your pondering path. There are so many lost skills but customer service and counting change is indicative of a basic skill that all of us should have learned. I was getting take-out once and the clerk over-charged me. She had to ask her manager how to give me a refund. And then when she did, she asked if she could give me a store credit because it was too hard for her to give me a credit.

My reply was I need my refund because I will not be coming back...ever.

Kathy Streib - I can "feel" the exasperation in your comment.  And it's one many have experienced.  That story is repeated far too often.

Oh man don't get me started on the change thing - I mean as in coins.  The young kids really don't know how to give back change.  Oh well.  I count it out to make sure and they give me 'that' look!   As for change - change - that is my middle name.  I love to change things up and keep the energy moving along!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten - you're right energy can move us.  Such tools help us as we go forward.

In my experience, as for common cashiering knowledge, it's not just those younger than me. You see, I didn't "infer" us???  That's common sense, right?  I have seen coin-changing-aversion in groups of many age categories.

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! - you're welcome.  Consequences (intended and otherwise) remain a part of life.  I believe that is unchanged even as many sorts of things "evolve".     It's important to know stuff - sometimes simply for stuff's sake.

Oh, I need to go read Wanda's post, Michael - thanks for the share.

As for counting change, that is one of my pet peeves as well. I just don't understand how that is not something that is taught to every single elementary school student!

Great quote too!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - admittedly I struggle with thoughts of fogeyism, but it seems to have existed in me since I was a youngster.  Old habits may be difficult to eliminate.

Talk about a mixed blessing of sorts.  I am grateful for the ability but mindful of the need to move forward.

LOL Michael Jacobs, I'm an old fogey and darned proud of it!! Since my youth, others have said I was an 'old soul' and I don't mind that one bit! I LOVE seniors - most have so very much to offer the world!

As for accepting change and being mindful of that for forward mobility, I think we had to have at least a touch of that ability when we set out to do what we do professionally! I have seen those who resist forward progress (or any change, really), struggle in our profession.

Debe Maxwell, CRS - "change" is constant.  Resist at your own risk.  Fogeyism Forward!

Michael Jacobs - Timely post! I was in a gift shop yesterday standing in line behind a woman finishing up her sale. When it was my turn, the Cashier leaned in towards me and said (in a very loud rude tone) We don't taken change or cash. Only credit cards!

Michael, if I didn't really want that gift, I would have placed the item down and walked out the store, but instead I said, Is there any other way to pay for merchandise than by credit card today?

Her old cragy face cracked a smile and I paid without a smile or thank you.
