Friday Flags: A Place of Honor in Central CT
On a drive, in state this week, a sign made me take a detour to a memorial I have seen many times in the past. The signpost read Iwo Jima Highway, and I remembered the Iwo Jima Memorial that occupies a place of honor near the campus of Central CT State University.
I don't know how accurate the sign may be that describes it as a National Memorial, but the base of the statue shows the names of the Connecticut servicemen that lost their lives on Iwo Jima during World War II.
The battle to take the islands was the fiercest in the pacific and cost almost 7,000 US marines and Navy personnel.
At the end of the battle, a squad of Marines raised the flag atop Mt Suribachi, which was the inspiration for the completion of the battle.
There wasn't much wind, but a gust came up to allow me to get the shot.
