GRATITUDE POST - HAPPY FOR HIGH IMPACT WINDOWS

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

This is an unlikely post and I had no idea that I would be writing it.   The first and second week in November we were in Florida.  I remember on the Zoom call on November 8th, some asked me how I was making out with late year hurricane.  I just referred to it as a rain event.  That is to say I wasn't taking it seriously.

I am usually not around during the hurricanes and I have someone I call to put to put up the storm shutters and then take them down.  This time I was on my own.

Some people were putting up shutters others were not. I didn't know what to do so I started putting them up.  It was harder than I thought, the wind was blowing.  I stopped after three windows because it was also getting dark.  Fortunately, they were not necessary since the storm was not that strong in our area.

That was it.  I decided to find out about accordion shutters but I wouldn't want them in the front of my house.  How about high impact windows.?  I called Home Depot.  Those two windows had a premium price because of just two.  I asked for an estimate for the entire house.  I was pleasantly surprised.  The second quote from a local company was even better.

I am ordering from the local company and hope to have them installed in February.  No more worries about calling someone for shutters when I am in New York and no more worries when I am there.  Oh, also, I think that they also save energy, right Jan Green - Scottsdale, AZ ?

This is my third gratitude post for this month's challenge hosted by Debe Maxwell, CRS .

Having those high impact windows, Grant, will no doubt give you much peace of mind during big storms when you are not in Florida.

That sounds like a wise investment.  I certainly wouldn't want to have to put on shutters and take them off of my home.

Thanks, Grant, for sharing this story. I was not familiar with high impact windows.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Grant, I haven't ever seen storm shutters, and should have asked to see what they look like.  Glad the hurricanes were just rain events.

Yes, you are right!  Windows can save you a few percentage points on an energy bill.  they also provide a sound barrier, like Endre mentioned, too :)  Check your year over year energy bills and you might see the difference.  But be sure so compare the same month to month for same number of days of energy bills.  And make sure the weather is similar year over year.  That should tell you how much energy new windows can save you.  Typically, windows are a 17 - 20 year payback on average.   Let me know how the math looks!  Glad you will have new windows and thank you for the tag!  Always happy to chat about this topic :)

Sounds like a practical idea Grant, especially since you are not there all the time. BTW, we have priced other type of windows at Home Depot and they were higher than other quotes we receive!

Grant that is something we do not worry about here in the Northeast, but it was a very wise move for you to do that in Florida.

Wayne -  so glad that you were lucky all of those years.

Kat - yes I will.  Although the hurricane season is now over until June.

Nina - great peace of mind during those times.

Brian - no not at all.  It looks easier than it is.

Roy - it is amazing.  1/4 inch thick.

Joan - they are pieces of corrugated metal that fit one by one on your window.  The screws are embedded in the stucco.

Jan - thanks for the additional information.  I will let you know.

Larry and Sheila - true. And it always is good to support local.

George - I learned a lot when I bought the house in Florida.

Dorie - and also Jan tells me about the energy savings as well.

Will - we had a slight change because of an illness of the host's child but we had a great time at my daughter and son in law's country club.

Hi Grant- had we stayed in FL we too would have gone the impact window route. When we stayed during Irma, we were at our good friend's home because he was out of town. He had impact windows and unless we looked out the window, you'd never have known a huge hurricane was passing through!

Dear Grant,

In Europe, roller shades on the outside of the house are common. Some are manual, but many just require a touch of a button to lower them. They can be pulled up again slightly to open small slits for light & air. Helps a lot during all kinds of weather, including midday heat in the summer. If there is wind, even better.

Hi Grant Schneider -I don't know how I missed this post.  I am glad I checked it out.

My question is...What is the cost for "peace of mind?"  I am not sure you can quantify it.  You are doing something that will help you sleep at night.  This will also add security to your home away from home.

I am looking forward to your post after installation.

My husband worked nights and could not sleep during the day with all the light coming through the primary bedroom windows, so we had security shutters put in.  They were on a remote control. The room was pitch dark when they were closed.  They also kept out all the noise.  He loved it.  Your solution for your Florida home is a great idea.  Below are two security shutters; one is almost closed, and the other on the sliding glass door is fully open.

Dorte - yes I I also know about them.

Sheri - so I see.  You are right.  You can't put a price on security.

Endre - I always appreciate your humor.
