Growth in U.S. Metropolitan Areas, with Many Reversing 2021 Population Declines

According to the Census Bureau, Orlando was the fifth fastest-growing city in 2022, gaining 65,000 new residents; nevertheless, the total expansion of cities was stifled since the epidemic drove many to move to rural regions.

The migration away from urban regions during the first year of the epidemic either reversed itself or slowed down in its second year. The latest US Census Bureau estimates that metropolitan areas like Texas and Florida grew while decreases in New York and Los Angeles were cut in half. This is in contrast to the first year of the pandemic when people fled urban areas in droves.

Fear of the virus caused residents to flee the most densely populated urban areas, and the growing popularity of remote work allowed people to live far from their workplaces. As a result, more than half of the 20 largest metropolitan areas in the United States lost residents during the first full year of the pandemic in 2021, and all metropolitan areas in the United States grew by just 0.1%.

In comparison, just eight of the twenty biggest metropolitan areas saw a population decline in 2022, while the growth rate for all metropolitan areas in the United States was 0.4%. According to population projections for 2022 that was issued on Thursday by the Census Bureau, the top metropolitan areas in the United States that saw population declines in 2021 but rebounded with growth in 2022 were Washington, Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Seattle, Minneapolis, and San Diego.

The population of the Dallas-Fort Worth region increased by 170,000 new inhabitants in 2018, making it the metro area in the United States with the highest population growth rate. This is the second year in a row that the Dallas-Fort Worth area has had double-digit growth. Metro Dallas-Fort Worth was the fourth biggest metropolitan area in the United States, with 7.9 million citizens, trailing only New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago also lost population in the last year, but these cities saw significantly fewer losses than the first year of the epidemic.

Other metropolitan regions that witnessed the highest gain in the number of residents were Houston, which added more than 124,000 people, Atlanta, which added over 79,000 people, Phoenix, which added about 73,000 people; and Orlando, Florida, which added almost 65,000 people.

Additionally, the metropolitan area of Phoenix reached the 5 million person mark for the very first time in 2017.

There were more indications that the pandemic-related migration would shift a year later in 2022. In 2022, the metropolitan areas of Boise, Idaho, and Provo, Utah, which had been popular destinations in 2021 for citizens leaving the most crowded cities on the West Coast, fell out of the top 20 in terms of population growth. Both of these locations were popular destinations in 2021.

Similarly, smaller localities collectively called micropolitan statistical areas saw population growth of 0.1% in 2021 compared to 0.2% in 2021.

A metropolitan statistical area (MSA) comprises one or more counties, each containing a core city with a population of at least 50,000 persons, all of which share high economic and social links. The population of the micropolitan statistical area's core city must be between 10,000 and 50,000 people, with no more than 50,000 people allowed.

Migration is the primary factor in population change. This includes migration inside the borders of the United States as people move around and internationally as people come from other countries. It also relies on the number of births and deaths within a community. The data disclosed on Thursday does not reveal the causes for population shifts; nevertheless, similar data at the county level released in March showed that most of the change was caused by international migration.

Individually, many of the cities in the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan region were among those in the United States with the highest population growth rates in the last year. Forth Worth, Texas, led the country with 19,100 new people, followed by the city of Phoenix with more than 19,000 new residents, and then San Antonio, Texas, with more than 18,800 new citizens.

Dallas and Frisco, two other communities in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro region, were among those whose numbers substantially surged, with an increase of 8,800 inhabitants in Dallas and 8,500 residents in Frisco, respectively. The robust economy, pleasant winters, and quality educational opportunities in the area drew in these new inhabitants.

The Villages, Florida, is a relatively new retirement community located northwest of Orlando. Between 2021 and 2022, The Villages, Florida's population increased by 7.5%, making it the most rapidly expanding metropolitan area in the United States.

Especially with urban areas that have had a kind of openness to re-invention, and making use of abandon buildings and community events and such..

Good morning Scott. People migrate away from areas politically inept to areas of development and progress. What is the log term effect if they brig their political leanings with them? Hopefully they have learned from their mistakes. If not, they will just spread ti disease. Enjoy your day.
