How to Have a Smooth Move…Tip #1

Once your home has sold, your “Moving” list begins and grows every day. Will you be hiring a moving company? Will you do your own packing or use professional packers?moving

Having moved at least 10 times, my tips come from my own mistakes and what I’ve learned.

First...If you hire a moving company, you’ll want to ask how they calculate their fees. The more you have to move, the more you’ll have to pay,

There’s no reason to take what you don’t want, need or use anymore to your new home!

Begin EARLY If you’re hiring packers, don’t wait until they walk in the door to decide what to pack. They work quickly and start wrapping and packing as soon as they walk in the door.

If you’re planning on doing your own packing, you’ll still want to edit BEFORE you start to pack.

My tip is to take one area at a time. Begin with a drawer in your kitchen and have a trash bin on one side and a box for donating on the other.

Do the same with your pantry and closets. It’s a lot easier to pack if you’re not trying to decide what to keep while you’re packing!!!

If you have those “special” items, there’s no reason not to take them. I brought a hand-painted martini glass with me on our last move.

Most of us are collectors of things What you have to ask yourself is why you’re holding on to something. The key is to learn to control your treasures and not let them control you.

Recap…Tip#1- Don’t pay to move what you no longer need, use or want. Edit NOW!

"The key is to learn to control your treasures and not let them control you."  That's a very valuable tip, Kathy!

Thank you Myrl Jeffcoat We often get caught up in the act  of "collecting" things more than what we actually collect.

Such a great tip on moving Kathy!  I find that so many sellers, even after having 'the talk with them about what to take or not' still take too much  stuff and end up donating or selling on the other end. And paying for movers to move to boot.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten I can honestly say "been there/done that!"  We have to decide before we move but it's not as easy as it sounds.

Laura Cerrano you have to be very careful and interview at least 3 companies! But yes, they know what they're doing.

I agree with Anna Banana that you can never be too prepared in that way and exactly that way! Figure out what you don’t need first and foremost

You have to be careful hiring a moving company and you have to be careful if you don't!  Moving is definitely challenging!

Lise Howe I agree!!!  On our last move, we packed a lot of our own items but I had the movers pack fragile items because that way they are responsible if they break.

faye schubert oh yes. In fact, I once moved from my second story apartment to one on the first floor. I was going to be very organized bout it but one Friday night my friends were over and someone said "let's get started now!"

Ugh...everything was moved but there was no space in my new apartment to move. Every counter space was covered with my stuff!

Hi Kathy:

There's lots of great advice here. Having moved about a dozen times I can say your advice is right on target, and the sort of things I usually share with clients who are moving, whether locally or a long distance. I have a checklist I share that offers tips about things to ask moving companies, too.

Paring down is essential, especially those heavy items that pump up the moving cost.

Jeff Dowler, CRS that's smart to provide a checklist for your clients. Larry had a mounted turkey in flight. It was beautiful. With each move, the crate the movers built for it got bigger and bigger. $$$$

That's a great story Kathy Streib  It's all about money. And those "little" expenses add up quickly.

Hi Kathy Streib Moving can be stressful if you do not have a plan. I tell my clients when we list to get their plan in order.  What goes where. I like the stuff that is going elsewhere and not to the new home to be gone by moving time so there are no chances of unwanted items being upacked at the new home.  The truth is...their is not perfect way to pack and move...but the more control you have the better.

Thank you Kathy for sharing your experiences!   Mike

I agree with your making a plan Mike McCann - Nebraska Farm Land Broker but sadly, as they say....the best laid plans.  For our last move, we pared down so much that when got settled in Houston, we had to buy some items we'd gotten rid of in FL.

This is great advice. For our last move, we went through the house way before we put it on the market, and made those decisions. The stuff we wanted to keep but it was going to be cluttering the photos went into storage. The stuff we wanted to give away was given away. The stuff we wanted to dump got dumped. By stuff of course I mean personal treasures. :-)

One of my biggest pet peeves...people who just pack everything and bring it to new house to deal with it there. Take the time to weed out what you don't need BEFORE putting all the effort into packing and moving and unpacking it!
