Hurricane Season 2023…Think You're Ready?

For all but 3 years of my life, I have lived in hurricane areas…Texas and Florida. And every June, I try to remind others to be prepared!

By the way…even if you don’t live in a hurricane area, you still need to be prepared to leave or shelter at home!  There are fires, snowstorms, earthquakes, floods, chemical leaks, or tornadoes that can impact your life.

FIRST…

Make a plan. Drop the I should do this…DO IT.

SECOND…

Make a list and know…

-What you would take if you had to leave

-Where you would go if you had to leave

-If you have pets, are there places that will take them

-What you need to have at home if you had to shelter in place

THIRD…

Gather and Back Up

Don’t wait until the last minute to gather the documents that you would need…wills, insurance papers, medical information, etc.

Back up photos to the cloud.

There’s much more to being prepared but this is a start. What you need to do may depend on where you live.

The important thing is to think about YOUR PLAN. Whether it’s an act of nature or manmade, at some point you may have to call upon that plan.

Great advice for any homeowner wherever they may live. There are so many types of emergencies to be prepared for and these are all good.

Thank you Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543  I can remember several years ago our friend's house burned. Everyone was safe but they were out of it for a year while it was being rebuilt.

Hi Kathy:

This is great advice for preparing for any natural disaster. I bet most people aren't really as prepared as they could or should be.

Jeff Dowler, CRS Thank you. I remember during one of our hurricanes in FL we had a mini tornado that blew our storage shed apart. It had 10 filled dive tanks in it.  We'd been so busy with the hurricane shutters and securing the boat, we didn't even think of the shed and dive tanks. Lesson learned.

Kathy Streib This is wonderful advice for everyone to get ready for storms. With the way the weather is changing, you never know what will happen

Hannah Williams I agree. The weather has been weird!  We had the freeze back in 2021 and were without power for 3 days. Would never have guessed that.

It’s time to stop subsidizing property insurance in hurricane and flood prone regions. It would lead to better construction

My husband was a builder Edward Gilmartin for a major builder. I asked him once if homes could be made safer and he agreed that they could be but then, many would not be able to afford them.

Dr. Paula McDonald   When we lived in South FL, I was baffled by the number of people who would complain the day after a hurricane that they had no water or supplies and wanted to know where the government was to help them.

Hi Kathy,
I'm in wildfire country. I've only had to evacuate once, but it's not a good feeling. Thanks for the tips and I loved faye schubert's tips, as well.

Carol Williams I'm glad that you're prepared!  At least with hurricanes, we have some notice. After one hurricane, I learned from a friend to have head lamps.  If the power goes, at least you can see what you're doing and still have your hands free.

Good for you George Souto During one hurricane in FL, we stayed at our friend's home who had a house generator.

Those are handy suggestions for hurricane season preparedness, Kathy.  Each part of our country has natural disasters to ready for.  It's important to know the risks, and the ways to prepare.

I agree Myrl Jeffcoat People need to know where there documents are and have devices backed up.

Have lived through a tornado, so know the importance of being prepared or just praying the storm passes quickly without inflicting much damage, if any. Thankfully, we do not live in such an area now, Kathy. Like Matthew Klinowski, PA,said, I wouldn't mind seeing those Huirricanes...LOL!

Leanne Smith That's thinking ahead!!! Smart move. Here and in FL we'd see the power company trimming trees near power lines long before the hurricane season.

Our very wet winter produced a lot of vegetation which is no dried.  By being proactive, hopefully we will avoid any desert fires.

Kathy Streib this is a great reminder to always be prepared, Living in Colorado I had always thought I was immune to many of these, but the firestorm that swept through a neighborhood west of Boulder a couple years ago, destroying 1000+ homes makes you realize you should always have an escape plan.

PS tomorrow June 3rd, is known locally as the most violent weather day of the year, with spring transitioning to summer we see tornadoes and hailstorms more often within two weeks either side of this date than any other time of year.

John Marshall - FORE! Good to see you!  I hope that those fires will motivate you to make your list and have an escape plan!!!

And I was not aware of the significance of June 3 for your area. I just took a peek at your weather and it doesn't look that good!!! Yikes.

So true Kathy.  And there are monsoon storms, too.  One night, about 8:30, after leaving my gym, I drove straight through a "haboob" with a wall of dirt. Had to swap out the air filters on my car.  It was just awful.  We got those every few years where they are really bad.  Last year was pretty mild.   Nothing like a hurricane though!

Jun 02, 2023 04:52 PM

Jan Green - Scottsdale, AZ that sounds scary!  At least we have some warning before a hurricane is coming.

Yes, it can be scary.  They do give us warning, but if you're in the gym with your phone off - no warning!

As Dorie Dillard Austin TX said, the key is to actually have a plan. that is, essentially how life is, in general too many people fail to plan.

You’ve presented a fantastic list of things to do to prepare in the event of a hurricane. Great post - i really is as easy as 1-2-3, Kathy.

As much as we have gone through the changes in global warming we are conditioned and prepared to go. Today wear winter clothing. Only 49 F right now. Will be a relatively mild day. Next week, put on gloves ??   May be ??

PS: Standby power generator, chargers all ready to go.
