I have a hard time reciting a phone number.

Reciting the first 10 digits of Pi would be beyond me, much less 1,000 digits. Now with smart phones remembering everything I couldn't even tell you what my wife's phone number is.

Back in the day I was a phone book junkie. I could spend an hour just looking through the white pages and on rare occasions I'd look through the Yellow pages. Today's phone book is a mere fraction of the size it was just 10 years ago and there is so little information in it I seldom even pick it up more than once a year.

20 years ago you were nobody if you were not listed in the book. Today I believe if your name is in the book you are wasting your money.  What say You?

I did have a rotary phone for many years Ed (Edward) Silva, 203-206-0754 but it was a candle stick phone that I thought was cool.

They still distribute them here Kathy Streib but I don't have a clue as to why... they have gotten so small they don't even hold the door open on a windy day.

You hit on something that I've been dealing with, especially lately.  Last October when I went in for surgery, the hospital admittance clerk asked for my daughter's phone number.  I couldn't recite it, or the number of any of my children.  Once a family member gets a number, I punch it into my cell, and then press the button when I see their little face come up.  That's life these days.

Even though I was a mathematician, I never had any interest in trying to recite Pi out to as many digits as I could, haha.

We get small phone books delivered to us, throw them in a drawer, and never use them. I have to admit, while I have my husband's phone # memorized, and one of my sons since it's so similar, I just autodial them. I do still remember my phone number growing up and most of the ones after that!

Who has a phone book, Bob? We get the occasional very thin book delivered to our door and it immediately goes into the recycle trash bin.

Same story here Myrl Jeffcoat . The last time my cell phone died it was a bit of a disaster until I found an older one that had many of the numbers I needed on it. Now I back it up every once in a while.

Thank you for the honor of being featured in  Old Farts Club . 😊

Technology certainly is dumbing us down Endre Barath, Jr. and it's only going to get worse with AI. I do remember a few old numbers including my first number back 50 years ago (233-9196).

I did not know you were a mathematician Brian England , that is really cool. Timmothy, my son and artist, is incredible with numbers as well.

Good morning Kat Palmiotti . I do remember my first phone number as well and we do the same, throw it in the drawer and maybe pull it out once a year.

We do keep ours around Nina Hollander, Broker but very rarely use it. Our phone book used to have several pages of coupons in it that we did use for pizzas but even that has shrunk down to a single page.

Hi Bob, I haven't seen a phone book in years now. Who can remember phone numbers anymore? I am just glad I can save all my calls as contacts if I choose to do so. I often look up my contacts to call friends and family members. My wife says she still remembers my phone number from the 70's when she first came to the states.

Wasting money on a phone book - do they still exist?  Yikes.

The real phone book is the World Wide Web and our websites Bob "RealMan" Timm

We do not get a phone book delivered by the "phone company" anymore. In fact, our phone company is not a "phone company", it is a cable company that also provides our TV and Internet service.

Occasionally, we will receive a "yellow pages" book from a private producer. It goes straight into my recycling bin!

Jerry Newman I'd bet that if you did find a phone book for the San Antonio area it would be a mere fraction of the size of the old phone books. Like you, I ask people to text me and then I save their number.

I agree Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist , if I need a number I hit the web. We do get a book here, about a 1/16 of the size of even 10 years ago. Maybe it's good to see what companies are stuck in the stone age>

John Juarez it was not very long ago we received three phone books from competing companies. Now it's just the one very thin one that goes in the drawer until it's time to recycle.

I still get phone books - and still have clients asking if I have one! Here ya go!
I can remember my phone numbers when the area code was letters and there were only 5 numbers . . . I have a good memory and know many often-used numbers.
Helping the BF set up his phone, it needed you to plug in your number for auto-billing, he said I don't remember it! ARE YOU SERIOUS dude! LOL HIS own number!
(He knows mine, his daughter's, his sister's, a guy he worked with 30 years ago . . . doesn't dial his though!)
Technology gives us access to the wisdom of the universe and dumbs us down at the same time . . .
