I'm lactose intolerant ...

By
Real Estate Agent with Jameson Sotheby's International Realty

Before we get our collective Realtor underwear in a bundle, we have all seen much worse things occur whilst in our duties as  Realtors.

This is a case of a Realtor, showing a property to his buyer.  While he was waiting for his buyer to show up, he was waiting in the property, he went to the refrigerator, opened it up and helped himself to the seller's milk.  Okay, okay... not bad enough, I suppose, but he didn't take out the milk and pour himself a glass, he actually raised the bottle to his lips and drank directly from it ... then returned it to the fridge, as though nothing happened.

The homeowner found this on his home camera, and confronted the Realtor a couple of days later, and asked him if there was anything he'd like to share about his previous visit.   The Realtor paused for a moment and replied: "the milk?"  he clearly knew.

The Realtor was charged a significant fine, was fired by his agency (later hired by a different agency), and was fired by the buyers.  All of this occurred in British Columbia in 2022. full story

Seriously who does that in a home owners home!  Geez.

You know, Ms. Banana, I'm hesitant to even take a drink of water, at the home of a seller.  But I would never go into a seller's refrigerator and help myself to anything of theirs... let alone drink directly from a bottle of theirs and return it to their refrigerator.

What about Covid?!?  Could they bring potential assault charges?!  I would think so.

Sometimes sellers will leave bottle of water in a cooler here in PHX, especially in summer for agents and buyers.   But anything else is totally off limits. And during C.......nuts.

I operate under the assumption that I am ALWAYS being recorded (visually and audibly), it's just safer that way.  Not that I'm inclined to drink milk from the bottle in any case.

It may not be 1984, but big brother is watching more now than they wrote about in the book. That was very stupid.

Alan- that is disgusting and unbelievable. Agent or not, who goes into a stranger's home and takes something from their fridge? And to drink directly from the milk bottle is just too ICK for words.

you've got my vote, Ms. Streib.

WOW! How gross! This agent was certainly brazen and made a very unwise decision. Got milk?

I wouldn't drink directly out of the bottle in my OWN fridge.

Fascinating to read the comments and see how many veer to the issue of being recorded rather than the idea that you should always behave appropriately even when you know no one is watching. This was just wrong - and disgusting

That is incredibly stupid.

Cameras are very small and everyone should be forewarned all conversations and anything done in the house is being viewed.

Oh for crying out loud - that was wrong on several levels! Drinking milk straight from the container - yuck. Drinking milk that doesn't belong to you straight from the container - double yuck. Doing something unprofessional while working - dumb. Not opening up those heavy drapes near the sofa - ridiculous!

yeah... lots of yucks.. i'm going to go with the double yuck.

WTH? Who does that? And, he did it so casually. It wasn't a small sip either, not that it makes any difference. It was incredibly stupid, inconsiderate, and unprofessional.

And it looked like it wasn't the first time he'd done something like that. He seemed very comfortable with what he was doing. And the shorts! 😉

Good morning Alan,

This is so disgusting! Very unprofessional and cost him dearly. We had a similar incident and a realtor was caught swiping chocolate bars and a book! Really!!! She lost her license, job and reputation..so incredibly stupid!

In my opinion, it didn't cost him enough.

Good morning Alan. A perfect example of you can't fix stupidity and arrogance. As a managing broker "you are fired" comes to mind, but not nearly enough. Enjoy your day.

They're everywhere! They're everywhere! AMAZING story! I can't even imagine. It's so easy to forget they're there. I learned the hard way (many, many years ago) when I showed a home that had been vacant for almost a year. Seller had moved out of state and there was no furniture. I sat with my clients on the fireplace hearth as they discussed that the home was everything they ever wanted, they'd pay more than full price for it, but they wanted to start low. The Seller obviously countered our offer, and the other agent told me they had our full conversation recorded. Buyer Beware! 😬

It's not even about being recorded. That the agent could so nonchalantly do that goes to character. I agree. I wouldn't even do that in my own home. Gross on so many levels.

Wow, not good, was he a Realtor abiding by the code of ethics....I guess not. Remember the story in NJ where the listing agents were using the home for sale at the shore as their place to get away for a little tryst time?

It’s wise to carry a bottle of water with you. Can’t imagine even opening a sellers refrigerator

I can't imagine opening the seller's refrigerator, unless the buyer was with me.  Let alone taking something from it.

I must live in a super friendly place ... most my sellers treat me like their babysitter and say "help yourself to snacks and anything in the fridge while we're gone".  But I always use a glass.

Aug 04, 2023 09:08 AM
Alan May

it's a totally different story when your sellers give you permission.  In this case (if you follow the story) this guy was the buyer's agent, and clearly did not have permission.
