Is It Really Possible To Be OVER-Prepared? (nope!)

Preparedness has always been a top-of-mind thought around here . . . we are due south of two dams, and if someone hit either one we'd have about 20 minutes to get to higher ground - which is about how long it would take to get there.

Make your emergency plan, stock your bug-out bag with essential survival items, etc. that you'd need for a few days.

But what if the disaster is not an 'act of God' but of man?

Example: One good EMP could knock out a power grid. That's wayyy beyond 'an inconvenience'! And in case you think I'm wearing a tinfoil hat, Forbes Magazine recently published an article on the potential damage. Read it for yourself.

Some additional points:

Have COPIES of insurance policies, IDs and important paperwork (wills, trusts, deeds, etc.)

Be mindful of your pets. A good idea is to have a picture of you with your pet(s) just in case you are separated, to affirm ownership. Have pets microchipped and the information stored in hard copy for your bug-out bag.

Medications are important - see if your pharmacist/insurance/PCP can approve 60-90-180 days' worth of needed meds so you have backup there.

WATER.

And CASH. A good amount, if you can stash it.

Here are over 100 stock up items to consider having in case of an extreme emergency. No you may not need all, and city folks or HOAs may preclude having chickens, LOL . . . . but see if there are items on this long list that would make sense to have:

The author of this list is clearly 'an extreme prepper' and is also retired military and LEO . . . it's comprehensive indeed.

But the more prepared, the less need to worry.

Being prepared can mean the difference of perishing or surviving, BB, thanks for sharing that comprehensive list. We are well equipped for emergencies and are always adding to the list. Next spring, we may add a few chickens to mix at the Silo!

Hi Candice,

As you basically stated.  You can never be too prepared! When it looked like we were having supply chain problems, my husband ordered 3 month supply of food and water that can be stored for 25 years if necessary.  The water can only be stored for 2 years.

This is a very comprehensive list to digest for one's needs.  Pick and choose what works best for you.  I am going to bookmark this for future reference.

Thank you so much!

Yeah, I have a good stockpile of supplies . . . 4Patriots is a great resource for MREs and other survival goods!
Last Labor Day Weekend we had a wicked storm come through and literally snap power poles up and down the parkway and highway like matchsticks! I was able to loan my portable solar backup generator to neighbors (some were down for a week!) so it came in very handy. Our power grid here has been upgraded recently but I'm thinking I'm getting a bigger generator 'just in case' . . .

As I learned in the Girl Scouts six plus decades ago "be prepared." This is an amazing list... one of the best I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing it. Most people would be way ahead of the game if they followed 50% of it.

EXACTLY! It's a lot but even a few things could make one more comfortable and healthy in an unpleasant situation.

I am glad that I live in an area where we don't seem to need to be prepared for natural disasters but I do realize that anything can happen.

I think she is talking about low water levels in our big lakes and River . . . we can ABSOLUTELY use some DRENCHING monsoons for like a month straight! LOL (and now we're all prepared)

We have the ability to get by for some time in our home (and keep feeding our cats and dogs for quite some time too).
For our next place, being self-sufficient as possible is high on our list, but if we get to the point of an EMP burst, things are going to go downhill quickly.  My understanding is that would wipe out our solar panels and battery storage, and that outdoor wood burning furnace needs some electricity to run the circ pumps and blower motor.
Sometimes I have to wonder when is enough, enough?  A back up for the back up for the back up?  Short of hitting the lottery, there's a limit to how much any of us can expend on preparing for various scenarios.

That's quite a list!  It's hard to be completely prepared, but even enough supplies for a few weeks is a great start.  It's awful how dependent we all are on the internet.

Great advice, Candice. It seems we are being reminded more and more often about the value of being prepared with the disasters that have been happening, and the disadvantages of not being so.

One cannot be overprepared for emergencies, but also need to keep some semblance of balance.

A few years back, we lost power for a week in winter.  It took creativity to be able to get through it, and allowed for careful thought as to what should be on hand in case it happens again.

Hi Candice- Having lived in FL and back here in TX, we always stay prepared. I do have a bug-out bag as well. Even though I always keep staples in stock, since 2020, I have a larger inventory. After the 2021 freeze we had, we now have a generator. I remember after one of the hurricanes in FL, even after everyone was reminded to have at least 3 days worth of supplies, there were still people the day after the hurricane complaining they had no water. We are responsible for being prepared.

Aug 18, 2023 05:13 PM
Candice A. Donofrio

Absolutely! I don't know how Floridians could DO hurricanes - my late MIL never gave it a second thought and they always were fine . . . there's a predictive astrologer I've taken classes from and follow on SM, he's been saying have 3 MONTHS cash and supplies for 'whatever', and I do. My husband was like that and my TX prepper BF is like that on steroids! LOL I'm still not living in a fort, we have an understanding!

Love your list Candice A. Donofrio I will add a few more:

if you stay home, fill your bathtub with water for flushing the toilet.

Give each person in the household a face cloth in a zip lock bag for the steamy FL humidity if the power goes out to refresh themselves and use less water.

Have several coolers. One for drinks, the other for the frozen items you took out of the freezer.  Buy dry ice and use it for these coolers.

When using your coleman grill boil water for coffee/tea. Then use it to boil water for pasta, reuse the past water to cook something else like boiled potatoes to make a salad and use up the condiments that need refrigeration.

Yes, I was also a girl scout and have been prepared in most instances.😎

Top off your gas tank and check your tires before you hit the road.  By all means check the oil and get it changed on time.

Me, I would evacuate and load the car with my supplies.

I too subscribe to survivalists prepareness and have stocked my pantry appropriately with food items, water, propane tanks for the grill and BBQ charcoal as well.

Truth is...we are never fully prepared for the devastation that a major earthquake, flood, tornado, hurricane, fire or bomb can bring. Yet, we can't just throw up our hands. We have to take steps to have some level of basic preparedness.

Thanks for your exhaustive list.
