Why do I Love Minot North Dakota?

We have all learned, or at least been told, NOT to love anything that can not love you back. That's good advice to live by.  It's not so much that I love Minot (yuck) but I do love the friendliness of the people in the community.

Minot is a small city of just over 50,000 people. North Dakota, as a whole, is not a diverse community BUT Minot is. The Minot Air Force Base population of 5,494 active duty troops and the families of those Airmen and Misslers plus the support staff that comes with those troops bump that up to 14,624. They all add a lot to the cities diversity.  And then there is the constant influx of oil field workers who come from all over the world. It all adds up to you being surprised at Minot's diversity when you walk through the community.

Talk about friendly...

Even in a crowd like this it's all smiles (except that one lady).

In Minot it is highly unusual for people not to greet each other warmly, even in a crowd like this. I think it's part of the isolation caused by our winter months that makes everyone happy to see each other when ever we can get out... summer or winter.

Some words about things that can't love you back.

The terrain: Minot ND is in the Mouse River Valley (Souris River Valley in Canada). At one time many contributaries feed the Mouse right here in Minot causing what we call coulees. These coulees hold a large abundance of wildlife, most notable are the deer and turkeys. If you like wildlife and don't want to travel out of town to see it, it's right here in town. The coulees also offer natural beauty as they are totally ungroomed with a wide variety of indigenous trees and shrubbery.

The Mouse River itself adds it's own beauty to the area. While it is not a river one would want to swim in (it's a muddy river) it does offer in town fishing opportunities. Due to various past flood control projects there are many "dead loops" around the valley that also harbor beautiful wild life.

The Arts: The City and the University strongly back all art projects plus we have a very active arts council, Minot Area Council of the Arts (MACA). When I was on the board we rallied the community to bring in an organization known as ArtSpace. In order to bring them in we had to construt a building to hold a learning space, gallery, and lofts for artists. The building we (MACA) built was the first new building downtown in 30 years.

Events: Minot North Dakota hosts the largest event in the State (The ND State Fair) and shortly after that event we host the largest North American festival celebrating Scandinavian heritage (The North Hostfest).

There is so much more to tell you about Minot but I will leave you with this:

The Food! It's amazing that a small city like Minot would not only have almost any ethnic food imaginable BUT there are so many that are absolutely top notch!

If you have any questions about Minot ND I will be happy to answer them for you, just give me a call.

Hello Bob - I knew of Minot North Dakota before joining the ActiveRain community.  However, you have introduced the city in a much different - and more meaningful way over the years. This month's challenge has certainly shown me communities in a new and very personal way.

Michael Jacobs most people who have heard of Minot but don't currently live here have ties to the Air Force Base. I really enjoyed this challenge and tried to take care in preparing for it. I just realized I forgot to mention one of our pride and joys, The Roosevelt Park Zoo.

Bob what an awesome post about Minot ND and in all fairness the crowded picture was great.... now here in LA you would not see such closeness we have all been scarred to death with Covid, Endre

Isn't it a shame that our government had/has filled us with fear as it has Endre Barath, Jr. ? For the most part the attitude about covid here was "don't tell us what to do".

Thank you for the overview of Minot ND - I never knew anything about it until I started reading your posts (Apparently I don't know any of the other 50,000 people there)

It's been my pleasure to tell people what Minot ND has to offer Kat Palmiotti . There are so many good things to say about living in a rural community, especially the people that make the community.

What a great post about Minot, Bob. And I loved all the pictures. I never heard of Minot till I met you here in the Rain and now I know so much more about your great little city than I ever would have expected to.

Good morning Bob. Your weather is not the best! Your diversity is unique for a small town in the middle of nowhere. And the friendliness of folks sure is much better than Chicago. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin you made me realize one other thing I forgot to mention, the lack of crime. I would walk down any street or alley in town at any time and NOT fear for my well being.

That has been my experience as well, the people around us make life enjoyable or not.  I feel that I enjoy doing things that I normally wouldn't enjoy doing if I enjoy being around the people I am with.

That is very well said Brian England .  If we are with people we are comfortable with then anything can be a pleasant experience.

You make your community come alive in this post.  It would be very fun to visit Minot. I love the picture of everyone downtown in there heavy jackets.  I think I would want to be very close to everyone in that weather, too!  😉

Thank you Ray Henson I enjoyed touting the community. That hardest part was not to go on and on.

I don't remember what the event was Kathy Streib but it just goes to show that winter doesn't cancel all the fun we have here.

My son-in law is in the Air Force and stationed in Boise Idaho. I did not realize that they get stationed based on the type of plane they fly. What kind of planes fly out of Minot?

Bob "RealMan" Timm did the Chinese weather (spy) Balloon float over your town?

Feb 27, 2023 12:42 PM
Bob "RealMan" Timm

B52's Buzz Mackintosh but Minot is host to two of the legs of the nuclear tripod as we also have a missile wing here on the same base.

Feb 27, 2023 12:08 PM
Bob "RealMan" Timm

It did not Buzz Mackintosh , after it went over Kat Palmiotti 's neck of the woods it headed South East and skipped ND. That surprised me with us having two nuclear installations 13 miles North of town.

thank you for sharing! I love seeing everyone's enthusiasm for their hometowns in these posts... very cool that due to the Air Force base + oil workers that Minot has much more diversity than the rest of the state. And I am glad you highlighted the food- always the most important part of any city if you ask me

Oh, what a lovely post about your town of Minot, Bob. I love all of your photos and illustrations but, the one with the large crowd really does show the friendliness on the faces of everyone in the shot. How cool is that?

Thank you for participating in February's challenge. I'm on vacation (at a conference and having a little fun too) and time has been really tight this week. So, I'm late reading this last week's posts! Happy March!
