Leaks, More Leaks & Timber!!!

This week keeps on giving, giving and giving!  Guess we won the lottery!

First we got our water bill and it was sky high. Oh great, another big water leak!  The plumbers came out first thing Thursday morning and they located the leak at the main water line and shut the water off immediately. They thought they had the right spot to dig to fix the pipes and 5 hours later... they still hadn't found it. Man, now they had to shift course and tear out  part of our huge bougainvillea trees and go under it.  3 hours later they thought they had the problem solved.  Back on went the water - with no luck. They worked until 8:30 that night to finally get the water hooked back up and said they'd come back the next day to fill in the hole.  Fine with us.   We were thankful to have water back on!  And for these dedicated hard working guys!

About 8 the next morning both Gary and I noticed the water was flooding all over the place.  OMG.  Now what we both said?  We shut off the water immediately!! And the first thing we both thought - thank goodness this didn't happen in the middle of the night as we would have flooded out.  The plumbers were there within an hour and once again spent the better part of the day FINALLY getting the new pipes to fit properly. Water was back on by about 5:30 that evening.  Thankful - YES!  They'll be back on Monday to fill in all the holes and tidy up the yard. So far so good!

On Saturday our landscaper called us and said he could come on Sunday to take out the dead palm tress.  Since we have quarterly bulk trash pick up coming on Monday we  wanted to make sure those trees were down.

Back story on the trees......

We originally had 12 Palm tress planted in the back yard in 2005 or so, at the same time we re-did the pool and landscaping.  In 2020 we had a very, very hot August and lost 8 of our trees.  That was very sad to see. This August was another hot month. Out of the 4 trees still standing only 2 made it through alive. We'll see how the other two survive - hopefully good.  Since the first hot August in 2020 we let all the other trees/plants grow up really tall and large and that left the yard looking gorgeous and full of blooms all year long!! And we enjoy 'the look' a whole lot more now!

FYI it is normal for it be quite hot in Phoenix during August!

The moral of our last few crazy days...

We're Thankful for all the wonderful people in our lives and how grateful we feel each and every day to live in our own little oasis!

Anna that had to be a very frustrating experience, and one that is hopefully behind you.

Hi George Souto I wouldn't call it frustrating more like - a tad disruptive to our daily schedule!  It sure did make us very grateful for running water!  And thankfully we had plenty of bottled water on hand.

Hi Endre Barath, Jr. yup it's getting a bit old!!  Still waiting for plumber to show up and hook up the irrigation system and fill in the tunnels!  Thankfully the bulk trash people were here before 7:30 so at least we're done with that.  You'll laugh I kept hearing pounding thinking - now what is that?  I just opened my office blind and the neighbor behind us one street over is having a new roof put on.  Norman is not happy.  What are those people doing up there - it's not right - is what his bark  and growling is saying !!  Too cute!

So what drama did you have going on?

Hi Wayne Martin puzzle is solved almost!  They still have to re-hook up the irrigation system to main line but we're prepared better today.  Soon things will be back to peace and quiet.

Oh my, I'm glad they finally figured out what was wrong and fixed it properly! I hope you have no more issues with the water - that's one thing, we cannot live without!

It was interesting to say the least Kat Palmiotti . The first thing I did today was take a shower.  They should be hear soon (I hope) to hook up irrigation system which means the water will be off again.  I sure hope it goes quicker today than the other two days.

Oh my goodness, Anna. If I had to go through that by now I'd be a raving lunatic.  Hopefully the "fix is in" once and for all and that all you landscaping survives.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Well what are you going to do Nina Hollander, Broker .  It is what is so we had to deal with it the best we can.  Today we're more prepared to have the water off for more than a couple of hours.  And you can bet we'll have a supply of water on hand should this ever happen again.  As for being done...not quite. I am getting a bit concerned about the landscaping not getting water since last Thursday.  That system is not hooked back up yet.

Oh I don't know Kathy Streib !  It was getting a bit 'old'!!  And our landscape system is still not hooked back up which is an issue as you know with our heat we've still got.  Back in the 90's but....they need water!  Hopefully they show up soon.

A few years ago, we opened our water bill and it was huge.  We looked everywhere, but could not find it.  We called people for help, including the water company and had no luck.  The next month the bill was even more exorbitant.  A plumber friend told be to check the automatic water lever gauge on our pool.  Bingo!  It was stuck and continually poured water in while the pool continually drained water out.  What controls the gauge?  The same thing that controls the water level in a toilet.  It cost about $10 to fix. Thank goodness for my plumber.

I am sorry you had to endure a much worse situation and I am very sad to hear that you have lost so many palm trees.  We lost agave plants and several roses this summer.  We watered the agave too much and, I think, the roses too little.  This living in the desert is a challenge. 😉

Oh man Ray Henson a $10 item solved  big water issue - ugh.  Well we think they're finishing up here - finally.  I will be happy to not see that truck in the front of the house again for a long time!!

Hi Anna:

That was quite the adventure! Good thing you had that warranty, otherwise the $ would have been up there given what plumbers charge. Imagine having a leak when you weren't home to deal with it?!

Adventure on the water Jeff Dowler, CRS !!  I like that much better!  And yes all those hours and days would have been quite over the top expensive. On top of replacing a water heater a week or so earlier plus a few more things.  Interesting month!!   And absolutely - we are grateful we were home and that it's all back together perfectly!!

It all sounds so stressful. Oh the joys of being a homeowner. LOL

We had a crazy high water bill one time and found out it was because our sprinkler system was leaking.  We never used the system and were not at all aware of the leak. Since our bills came quarterly it ran up quite the bill. We went to a city meeting to try and get the bill reduced but no luck.

Sep 28, 2023 07:23 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Hi Sharon Tara it could have been a lot worse had they not been able to hook the water up temporarily each evening. Yes sprinkler system leaks often have leaks here in Phoenix as we need to use them all the time.  We try to keep on eye on them quarterly.  Oh no....city won't give any money back!

Oh my gosh, we had a similar thing happen with a water main and the tip was the enormous bill, Anna! I SO feel for what you went through - and I hope it's all said and done now.

I love your backyard oasis and agree that the growth of the 'auxiliary' shrubs is simply stunning. SO thankful you have great trades who were Johnny-on-the-spot for you. That truly makes a world of difference.

Debe Maxwell, CRS don't feel bad!  It could have been an lot worse.  We were thankful they were able to hook up water in the evening temporarily at least.  All is good and the last few weeks have calmed back down.  Except we almost lost of little Barney yesterday in the pool.  Thankfully Gary was able to see it happen and was able to fetch him out.  He never goes over there as he hates the pool.  First thing Gary did was put up a fence across the whole yard so he can't have a chance of doing that again.

The back yard is ready for the season.....all the furniture is cleaned, pillows are out, new rug is out and we're ready to enjoy the back yard once again!   YEAH!!!!!  Kind of like you and your gorgeous sunsets!
