Septic Smart Week, Sept. 18-22The sixth episode of the Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services (DPS) Podcast, “Stay Septic Smart,” features important information and tips about properly maintaining a septic system. The DPS podcast is now available in advance of Septic Smart Week, which this year is designated from Sept. 18- 22. October is national Fire Safety month. In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire raged for 3 days over the period of time between October 8th through the 10th. One theory is that Mrs. O'Leary's cow kicked over a lantern in the barn and that's what started the fire.  It destroyed approximately 3.3 square miles (just slightly larger than the Town of Addison) and killed over 300 people. National Fire Prevention Week (the week starting October 9th) was founded in 1922 by the National Fire Protection Association and the organization later expanded their fire prevention efforts to encompass the whole month of October.Every year in Addison, the fire fighters of the Addison Fire Department will come to your home and replace the batteries in your smoke detectors if you cannot. From its very first moments in print on March 20, 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a smashing success.  While the book is wonderful, it is even more interesting to know that the book is based on at least one real person, Josiah Henson. Born into slavery near Port Tobacco, Maryland, around 1789, Henson’s father was sold south and separated from his family.  Henson was later separated from his mother and sold Adam Robb of Rockville, while his mother was sold to Isaac Riley.  Eventually they were reunited on the farm of Isaac Riley.  The story of Henson attempting to buy his freedom and that of his wife and children is truly painful (and too long to recount here.)  Thwarted at every turn as the price of his freedom kept getting raised, he eventually escaped to Canada wit... 09/16/2023

New COVID-19 Vaccine Now Available  The new COVID-19 vaccines are now available. The Food and Drug Administration approved a new vaccine and the advisory committee of the Centers for Disease Control recommended that anyone age 6 months and older get vaccinated. The new vaccines are a much closer match to currently circulating variants. They are updated versions of the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines.The vaccine is scheduled to be distributed to health care providers and pharmacies across the U.S. Insurance companies will pay for vaccinations and shots that will primarily be available through private physicians’ offices and local pharmacies.
