Gaithersburg Book Festival Poetry ContestThe Gaithersburg Book Festival annual high school poetry contest is now open for submissions. The theme for 2024 is “Envision a Better Future.” The top three poems will be announced at the 2024 Gaithersburg Book Festival on Saturday, May 18. First, second and third place winners will receive $250, $100 and $50 gift certificates, respectively. Fall Cleaning Begins for Public Parking GaragesThe Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) has started its semi-annual interior washdown to degrease and clean 21 County-owned parking garages in Bethesda, Silver Spring and Wheaton. The cleanings, which will occur on nights and weekends, began this week with garages in Bethesda and will conclude with Silver Spring garages on Saturday, Nov. 4.Some garages will experience partial closures during the cleanings, including select entrance/exit areas and ramps. Ad Campaign to Reduce Under-21 Alcohol Access and Consumption Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) is launching an ad campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of under-21 alcohol access and consumption. Starting this month, ABS will place public service advertisements on bus shelters and bus taillights to deter under-21 alcohol use and reduce adolescent access to alcohol.The bus shelter ads will be placed near high schools and feature the phrase “under 21 drinking can lead to alcohol addiction.” The Ride On bus taillight ads will be placed on Upper County routes and feature the phrase “60% of kids who drink get their alcohol from family and friends.” Ads will run for six weeks and include a QR code that can be scanned for more information on reducing under-21 alcohol u...

Encinitas Cruise Nights 2023~ Final Night ~ Classic car buffs and non-aficionados all love the Encinitas Cruise Nights that take place the 3rd Thursday each month from May through September. And that means the FINAL CRUISE NIGHT is tomorrow, the 21st, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Tomorrow night is also the kick-off for the annual Wavecrest Woodie Meet in Encinitas. So you can expect lots of classic woodies. Local car clubs park their vehicles along Main Street and some side streets for all to admire! Eugene F. "Buddy" Teevens, the longtime Dartmouth football coach and player safety advocate, died on Tuesday. I played High School ball back in Kingston Mass. at Silver Lake Regional with Buddy for 3 years back in the early seventies. A true friend and great person. Virtual Meeting on MD 190 (River Road) Corridor Safety StudyThe Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will host a virtual public meeting from 6:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, to share information and answer questions about the MD 190 (River Road) Corridor Safety Study.
