Lost Skills That May Never Be Revived

When young, many life lessons were taught immediately, like, using manners when in the presence of adults and having common respect for other people. Cursive writing was also introduced in elementary school as a disciplinary tool.

Technology continues to march on with cutting edge, exciting breakthroughs every day. Humans might even be able to live on Mars one day, if Elon Musk has his way. Being old school, in some ways, no longer holds appeal for most people.

Some things that may forever be lost to modern technology:

  • Using an Abacus

  • Building a Fire

  • Respectful Debate

  • Coping skills

  • Effective Communication

  • Reading Paper Maps

  • Cursive Writing

  • Letter Writing

  • Writing Checks

  • Balancing a Checkbook

  • Telephone Etiquette

  • Proper Grammar

  • Sewing Own Clothes

  • Shorthand

  • Counting Cash Back

Practicing real estate has been vastly improved by the internet, especially communication. It takes little effort to send/receive a text or e-mail to/from clients or fellow agents. Proper grammar and spellcheck is just a click away with online Apps.

As technology continues to move forward, making things more convenient, lessening the load, per se, it leaves behind many useful skills that served people well back in the day. If the internet fails, what will people do to survive?

Hope we never have to find out!

All of those things do matter, Kathy Streib. A cashier gave me $5 over what the amount should have been. Good thing I explained to her what she did before giving it back!

Many times, that is just a fishing expedition and I'll go to the lake for that type of activity, Endre Barath, Jr.! At least, I will net some results...

Have yet to add my contacts to my car (less distractions) and do not use GPS when looking for properties. I enjoy finding them based on experience, Kat Palmiotti.

Thank you so much for the feature in Posts Just For You, Kathy Streib! One more to add to the list is tolerance, it is lacking greatly in society.

Oh, I'm with you on each and every item, Wanda! Excellent (albeit quite sad) list and as you mentioned, parents of younger ones need to wake up and smell the coffee. These children do need home-schooling and if not that, serious parental involvement in their schools.

I learned to read maps at 6 years old and still have an atlas in each car. I do not rely on GPS guidance, especially travel to a new location.

It's sad that kids would rather text, than the handwritten note. That note is such a personal touch that a text cannot replicate, in my opinion.

I agree with most of what you said - except for communication. I think the Internet, texting, and email have reduced our communication skills. Add the fact that many have lost their grammar skills, and the world is full of misunderstandings and miscommunications.

Something else that has been lost: I learned recently that many young people do not know how to read a clock.

Teaching necessary skills to young people helps to increase their knowledge base and prepares them for adulthood. Unfortunately, many parents are enablers, setting them up for failure, Debe Maxwell, CRS.

When going on vacation with our boys and traveling by car, we used to rely heavily on the Atlas, faye schubert. I prefer that over a robotic voice droning on about 'turning left on the parkway' and so on!

I do agree that some forms of communication have suffered with the 'let the fingers do the talking' scenario but it is all there -IF- the desire overcomes someone to improve themselves through effective means, Marte Cliff.

82% of public schools are failing in America. Many teachers are more concerned about singularly ingratiating their personal lives into the classroom than instructing or inspiring children to learn and to do better, be better.

Our local school was failing back when I was in school, and still is. But at least it's just been failing academically. Teachers didn't bring their personal lives or their politics into the classroom - even when I was in college.

I suppose by now that could have changed, even in this small town.

Hi Wanda,

I have learned and practiced all the skills you mentioned except for using an abacus. My husband's father showed him how to use a slide rule.  I studied home-econ so I learned a lot of the skills there.  I will teach my grandson how to write using cursive.  It is on my list.

Sheri - good for you. If your grandson grows up and wants to become a historian, he'll be able to read those old documents when no one else can!

A curriculum based agenda needs to be re-introduced into public classrooms or all students will struggle with their skillsets, Sheri Sperry - MCNE®. My daughter-in-law is home schooling her children and she is teaching cursive writing as well!

I forgot to mention that I pulled my kids out in 2nd grade and home schooled them. They went back in high school, but what they learned was really up to them. The teachers made little effort.

Hi Wanda,
I don't even know where to start with a response except to say B-I-N-G-O.

It is quite sad, really. Technology is wonderful, but what do we do when it fails us?  I'm most disturbed by the fact that cursive is being ignored. How will the next generations read historical documents? Will there be a college degree in cursive writing offered for those who want to do ancestry and other historical research?

Future generations will be forced to believe what they are being told, rather than the truth. Similar to what is already happening but even moreso, Carol Williams. It is so disrespectful to our forefathers and an injustice to young people.

I am so glad that Kathy Streib featured your post - I missed it before - I love writing notes in long hand and I fear that some people are unable to read my notes because they don't understand cursive. .....
