Motivational Monday - Accepting Reality & Others in All You do

Of course, external factors have an impact on our motivation levels during our work days, the one thing WE can control is the attitude that we bring to the table each day. On Mondays, I feel strongly about how significant our own attitudes are!

In our business, we all know that Mondays are often our most hectic days - the attorneys and many lenders, surveyors, inspectors…heck, almost all of our team is off over the weekend. Mondays are catch-up days, often requiring our firemen’s hats that day!

Based on my experience as a professional, my own attitude helps increase self-motivation and professional effectiveness, especially when it comes to judgement. Yes, MY judgement of others can impact my self-motivation.

The best advice I can give you this Monday morning is to accept reality and others as they are. Self-motivation begins with having realistic and appropriate expectations of those around you. Circumstances don’t always conform to your agenda. Accepting the circumstances as they are, leads to finding common ground more quickly, being more efficient & achieving the results you set out to achieve.

Accepting others as they are leads to our being better problem solvers - and, after all, isn’t that one of the most important hats we wear?

Happy Monday Everyone!

Buyers and sellers have thought about gotta call my agent/broker/REALTOR first thing Monday morning over the weekend. And they do first thing Monday morning one by one. Don't make appointments going into a Monday morning so you are free to expect those calls, deal with them.

Also when the buyer and seller want to know where the appraisal report is, did surveyor get out to the property, is the attorney title work done, etc ... Let them all know reaching out but don't give expectation you will know in minutes and update them just as fast. It's Monday morning all across the Monopoly playing board.

Those other professionals are in the same MASH real estate emergency field hospital doing triage problem solving. Probably won't come up for air to make calls, answer emails until the afternoon Debe Maxwell, CRS .

Not having your calendar loaded to the brim going into a Monday helps ... frees you up to take the flock of new walk in lobby  patients and wall to wall calls.

Mondays are much harder when Saturday was not action packed productive. You go into a Monday way behind with loose ends from last week crowding your schedule. Sleep, exercise, nutrition and cheerful helps your performance too. It is not about you, it is all about how can you help them.

Think customer. No time to waste emotion feeling sorry, back biting or being self centered recoiling reactive for poor me. If you do, it's not the work load pulling you under water on a Monday More your your own attitude... it's taking an upset buyer or seller and the need for something to happen ASAP personally.

Deb, I like the way you refer to many 3rd party representatives, ie title, inspectors, etc, as part of your team.  Not enough realize the difference.  Kudos to you.  mdm

Hello Debe - I arrive at your post a day late (after first published) but with the reality that the big picture in so many ways remain important.  Context is a part of that.

Oh, so true, Andrew Mooers | 207.532.6573! It absolutely IS all about them and putting yourself, as their trusted real estate advisor in the best 'mental' state - attitude - is so very important. Like you, I don't schedule ANYTHING on Monday mornings simply because I dedicate that time to the normal Monday calls after a busy weekend with clients. And, you can absolutely make your normal prospecting calls in the afternoon - it definitely WORKS!

Another thing that you mentioned is setting expectations. I do exactly that all of the time - not just on Mondays. But, I will ALWAYS tell a client (or agent, attorney, etc.), "I have reached out to _________ and will get back to you as soon as I hear back from them. That has been one of those 'secrets' I learned back in the hospital - "The minute I hear back from the doctor, I'll be back to you with an answer!"

Hey, Brian England! What is is - if we "fail to plan, we plan to fail?" Well, if we don't plan these things, the craziness ensues, for SURE!

During the season last year when my Dawgs were ranked 2nd and 3rd Donald was yelling and I was excited because it always gives them more to strive for.

Coincidentally, my parents, also living in GA, are huge Dawg fans - second only to Clemson & SC (alum schools). Anyway, Mom's last night here on earth with us, we all watched that championship game with her - well, the first half anyway...

It was such a blow-out, she fell asleep & we left and to go my brothers for the evening. When we came back early the next morning, Ray asked my mom how she liked the game the night before. She said, "What game? It was more of a demolition derby!" Glad they won for her last football game to watch...at least here on this earth!

Another coincidence, the very first heart attack she suffered was while watching a college football game. She was PASSIONATE about college ball!

Hi Debe- I love your post. I have to continuously work on accepting others and situations for who or what they are. I can't change everything to fit what I think things should be.

I struggle with that also, Kathy Streib. Our Realtor® Code of Ethics doesn't allow us to voice our opinion of others, regardless of how wrong they are (on an issue or something they did wrong in a transaction.) It's a double-edged sword for MANY of us!!

Hi Debe:

Your advice to "accept reality and others as they are" is spot on, and something to always keep in mind...even when it's particularly challenging to do so. True in life and in our business. Our attitude plays a key role and that's something WE can control.

Enjoy your weekend!

Jeff

Debe,

This was great timing on your part and the subject is spot on with much of today's existing business climate. Let me mention a phrase which has stuck with me for decades. Over the years, when a situation would interrupt my effort or bring my progress to a halt, I would recall the motto our United Stated Marine Corps lives by, "Improvise, Adapt and Overcome"! When experiencing a "Titanic-like" moment during the course of a day, I would refer to this phrase as a means to readjust my effort in order to address the situation. Think about it? What can I do, how can I adjust and what needs to take place in order for me to succeed? With these words to back me up, I would put the wheels in motion instead of fussing over what "coulda, shoulda or woulda" have taken place.

Involving one's self with the marketing and sale of real estate ..... you can "expect the unexpected" to take place with regularity today. Having a "motivator" such as the now famous phrase associated with our Marine Corps, will keep the adrenaline flowing and lock in one's focus to "get 'er done"!

See ya,

Sharon
