Motivational Monday - Following Your Dreams is No Joke

So many parents encourage their children to follow their dreams; others think everything that happens in life is meant to be and dreams are just not worthy of our time. In my opinion, those are glass-half-empty folks! 

Before I ever knew that Walt Disney had coined the phrase, “If you can dream it, you can do it,” I was saying that to my boys every day! I wanted them to believe in themselves and in their dreams. 

Pie-in-the-sky ‘dreams’ are not simply dreams - they are goals; they are exciting goals. We work diligently to achieve our goals. We are encouraged by our coaches to create BHAG (big hairy audacious goals) and aim to achieve them. Aren’t those BHAG goals really ‘dreams?’ I believe they are.

I believe so strongly that they are, I truly do organize my goals and my life around those dreams. I remember meeting the top producer at one of the premier boutique firms that I joined just prior to the recession. He was (and still is) well known in the Charlotte area and sells a LOT of real estate each and every year. 

The company had his ‘President’s Cup’ prominently displayed in the study, a gorgeous space that was formerly a living room in an older house in historic Charlotte. That cup represented the name each year of the top-selling agent in the company. The company was filled with seasoned, top-producing agents, including the one whose name held the top spot on that trophy.

Agents had to be invited to join the company by an agent who worked there and I had received my invitation from someone with whom I had one of my very first cross-sales. I found that I had to have enough sales to be accepted AND there was a rather lengthy interview process to get in the door.

Long story short, I remember sitting in that lovely room, looking at that prominently placed ‘President’s Cup’ thinking, “If they take me on, my name WILL be inscribed on that trophy!” 

I was a relatively new agent - not brand new but, new enough that anyone who would have known of my dream to have my name inscribed on the President’s Cup, would have laughed hysterically!  So, I kept my dream to myself.

Well, I finally had enough sales to join the firm and I sailed through the interviews and was invited to hang my license with the brokerage.

When, going into the office, I parked so that I HAD to enter the office through the vestibule that was attached to the study. If no one was meeting in the study, I made sure I got a good glimpse of that cup! 

Ridiculous? Some may think so but, I’m a BIG believer in shaping your own destiny. I know, there is definitely a higher power but, I also believe that He lays out those opportunities for us. It’s up to us to do everything humanly possible to carry out our part of that destiny. 

Putting that cup inside my head as often as possible was a real motivator for me! The recession hit and while putting my boys, both through college was a top priority, I never lost sight of my own dreams - including the inscription of my name on that cup. And, I FINALLY got it! 

YES! Organizing my life around that dream gave me the ability to watch that dream come true. 

The only photo I have of it is blurry, as you can see, and you cannot see my name inscribed on the cup! Am I broken-hearted about that? Nope, I moved on to bigger and better dreams and I know my name is there. After all, it was MY dream! 😆
