Motivational Monday - Harness the Power of Failure

Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” – Robert F. Kennedy.

In the pursuit of success, failure is inevitable. Top business leaders in every field will tell you that they are most inspired by someone telling them that they can’t do something.

Tenacity is one of those inner-most motivators that many successful people will admit to being ignited when they hear, ‘You can’t do that.’ The negativity sparks a flame within those who are driven and tenacious; that flame rarely ever burns out when there is tenacity involved!

Failure, A Large Part of Success

Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.” —Denis Waitley

Business & executive coaches will often encourage their students to take risks and encourage them not to hold back in new endeavors. That is akin to saying, “Go ahead - make lots of mistakes!” The connotation is far more positive but, when you take risks, you often do make mistakes.

Bear in mind that these mistakes make you stronger and are the perfect foundation for success.

With business leaders, recognition that failure is inevitable is key. Plotting your process of recovery with each failure and following through with that, is what builds true strength. Remembering to dissect each and every failure is a ‘requirement’ as you move towards success.

“Most great people have achieved their greatest success just one step beyond their greatest failure.” —Napoleon Hill

Sure, we will all fail at a few things along the way but, it is worth taking thoughtful risks and embracing failure when it happens. Why? Because we know those missteps enable us to iterate and grow as a business owner or team.

Viewing failure and recovery as one of life’s challenges - not a threat, not a negative - is something in which those with a propensity to never surrender, excel. Embracing failure is a game-changer! Harness the power of failure - you’ll likely learn more from failure than from any other source of wisdom you’ll experience in your life.

Fundamentally, your life and career are made up of many small but, inherently important choices: you’ll make the right choice sometimes and other times, the wrong ones.  Knowing this can help to ensure that you maintain a necessary perspective and don’t view every failure as a major setback. Failure is a very helpful part of a bigger picture.

“Don’t worry about failures, worry about the chances you miss when you don’t even try.” —Jack Canfield

I think doubt is the biggest contributor to failure - especially when we doubt ourselves, Hannah Williams! Wipe that away and go for it, I say! No harm at all in failure as long as you keep trying, right?!

Thank you, Kris Collis, Associate Broker! I remember telling the story of Michael Jordan to my son on several occasions when he was playing basketball and lost.

I would also add the mantra, "Think of all of the learning opportunities from this loss - had you won, you wouldn't be reflecting on the game in the same light." There are so many opportunities in failure/loss!

Morning Debe.

I often wonder how many times I will fail each day.  Sometimes I don't, but more often I do.  We'll see what today brings.

One of the BEST postings on AR... I remember listening to an interview with Success magazine of the CEO that started Spanx ... The CEO talked about life growing up and her father's insistance in wanting to know what her brother and herself did during school that day.  She stated that he asked "What did you FAIL at, today?"   It was all about working towards success through failure... being a Billionaire she might have learned something by failing.  Thanks  for the posting.

Hi Debe Maxwell, CRS, I really needed to read this today. I have been working on something that is so beyond my comfort zone, I have been at it for an entire week now, still, nothing to show for except for some mistakes and I know, I have a very long way to go. Thank you so much for sharing!

Debe,

What a terrific post for these trying times. During the "intermediate stages" of selling a property, I look at each setback or interruption during the process, as just another "challenge" towards reaching my objective. Putting this in perspective, I have a small, framed"reminder" sitting on my desk.

"Successful People, Regardless Of Their Endeavor, Understand

The Importance Of Being Able to Finish"!

As a result of the status which currently "envelopes" our nation, those who attempt to meet new challenges, will most likely experience an environment filled with uncertainty, dysfunction and endless delay. Risking failure, in order to achieve ones objective, will solidify the "learning curve" necessary to secure success in our current environment. "Finishing" should be considered a goal. What additional actions can I initiate which will help me reach my objective? Let me end this post with one of my favorite quotes,

"If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride - and never quit, you'll be a winner. The price of victory is high but so are the rewards."

 Coach Paul W. "Bear" Bryant

If we don't fail, we aren't trying...failure is not easy, but it's part of life. It's best to acknowledge it and recognize what we could do differently so as not to do it again!  And THEN we can succeed :)
