Motivational Monday - Work Balance on Labor Day
As I laboriously work for clients who are fighting to win a new home this lovely Labor Day, life/work balance is always an under-thought. Many of you know, I am a self-professed (and hubby-professed!) workaholic. While I have been working on that for several years, I believe this past year has helped me become more balanced.
Labor unions set the standards in the mid-19th century for workers who now enjoy a 40-hour work week, minimum wage, sick leave, workers compensation, overtime pay, as well as child labor laws. The foundation was set to help create the most competitive workforce in the world — a workforce that made America the economic power it is today. Those laws are, today, being re-evaluated as studies have shown that employees who have even more time off, perform better when the ARE working! The jury is still out as to a change being made but, other countries have successfully proven this to be impactful in their own labor force.
Back to my point - labor laws encourage a proper balance between work and family through access to paid sick leave, affordable child care, as well as paid parental leave. My goals to find that balance have always been a struggle for me. I recently had a coach 'demand' that I delegate more of my responsibilities.
Grant Schneider will tell you that in order to be successful, you MUST delegate. So, I began delegating some of the things that I absolutely LOVE doing - including some of my marketing! Freeing up what I used to call, 'evening play,' as I assembled marketing pieces and 'played' online, I have discovered that I have FAR more fun with my hubby than I ever did before! In the past, he accepted my workaholism and never complained! Now, when I find myself having to work a little into my play time, he lets me know!
These babies are celebrating the holiday to the max!
Now that I have had to work this morning to ultimately win a bidding war for my client (YIPPEEEEEE!!), I will find a way to make up that time with hubby on this beautiful Labor Day. Maybe something on the grill? After all, isn't the belly the fastest way to a man's heart?!!
Relax and enjoy your time spent with family today but, also take a moment to remember why we even observe Labor Day. Do you have a little workaholism running through your blood that you need to address?!
