Poetry a town in Texas...
Poetry was originally known as Turner's Point, established in 1845. In 1876 the town was renamed Poetry. Maston Ussery, a local merchant , suggested the name as he said the town reminded him of a poem.
About 40 minutes from Dallas, the population of Poetry today is approximately 2169, with a truly rural feel even though it is close proximity to several large towns such as Rockwall, Greenville & Terrell. Incorporation was approved in 1984 but was invalidated by the Kaufman County Commissioner courts due to technical difficutlites. I have never been able to find out what those difficulties were but can guess there was much debate about it!
After 175 years the town finally became incorporated in 2020. Even though it was voted to be incorporated there is alot of mixed feelings and debate about this incorporation! Some are for, some are against incorporation. People believe that their taxes will go up and they will have rules to live by which they do not want! This is the reason they moved to Poetry for the rural feel and no one telling them what they can and cannot do, other than the simple rules I have listed below!
I came to Poetry in 2017 & built a barndominium home nextdoor to my inlaws. The have lived here since the mid 1990's when it was even more rural with sandy dirt roads! I am very fortunate to live here and count my blessings everyday!
There is a general store, a feed store & a few other small businesses, but for the most part we have to drive for everything else! It took awhile to get used to not being close to stores, but I do enjoy the quiet & a lot less traffic! We are close to Lake Tawakoni & Lake Ray Hubbard where we boat and fish alot in the spring and summer.
I work from home & this is my view every day! Our pond attracts deer, ducks, turtles and many birds. I enjoy watching them all plus all the bluebonnets we get every year!
Poetry is divided between two counties, Hunt County and Kaufman County. It is in Quinlan Independent School District & Terrell Independent School District. There is also an amazing Christ centered, small christian school with grades K-12th called Poetry Community Christian School
There are also a few wedding venues in Poetry. We don't particularly like the traffic it brings to our small quiet town but I know many people who have been married in them. I am sure a wedding invite to "Poetry" has a romantic feel to it!
Poetry has some simple rules thay they suggest everyone live by:
- Keep lot sizes 5+ acres or more
- Keep your dogs at home
- Replace trees you cut down
- Don't pollute or litter
- Promote wildlife and farming
- Wave at your neighbors as your drive down the road
It is that simple ! If you ever have the chance to drive out here you will love it and maybe be reminded of your favorite Poem! All we ask is you keep on driving! Ha!
