Nerdin Gardens: Size Isn't Always Important Bountiful harvests are the result of cultivating, tilling and careful planting that goes into the garden at the start of the spring season in Nerdin Gardens. Though growth has slowed, we are still pulling fresh fruits and vegetables almost every day. So far, we have picked zucchini, crook neck squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, oregano, thyme, onion chives, garlic, sage, jalapeño peppers, bell peppers, red peppers, strawberries, asparagus, green beans and snow peas and more. Production was enough to can a couple hundred jars of pure deliciousness, from sweet chili sauce (my mother-in-law’s recipe), zucchini relish, jams galore (peach jalapeño, apricot, strawberry), stewed tomatoes, almonds for future use.  The grapes and muscadines are almost...

Got in a bit later Friday evening, so didn't get to see too much, so made up for it today in Porto!Started out with a boat trip to see 6 bridges up and down the Douro River, so beautiful.   We saw more of the City, that you usually would not have seen by driving or walking.     There is a building that was a monastery above Porto (on the other side, officially Gaia) that was built in 1537.   Amazing how old these buildings are!   Sat next to a young couple from Madrid, and we talked the entire hour.   Connected on Instagram, and they said they wanted to come to Denver.  THAT would be so fun! This bridge has two parts you can walk on, one where everyone's heads are, and one above that really give you a great view! One thing, this town is built on a giant hill!   Walking up those hills rea...

This was one of 1500 buffalo up in Custer State park.  Next week on September 29 and 30 this have the annual roundup.  The purpose is to give them their shots can cut some of the herd to keep the herd at 1500.  They sell the buffalo to people that want to buy them.  If I had the room in the car, I buy one, wait I do not have a backyard big enough.

Hike Tam McArthur Rim To Broken Top For A Different Approach To No Name LakeEach year we hike to Broken Top from different trailheads, often arriving at our final destination at No Name Lake, the beautiful glacial aqua blue lake located on the eastern edge of the mountain. One of our favorite hikes includes first a trek to Tam McArthur Rim overlooking Three Creeks Lake outside of Sisters which in itself can be the destination for many. For us, this extended hike passes Tam McArthur Rim on the well marked but "not maintained" trail to Broken Hand and then to the rim overlooking No Name Lake. The total trip for us includes a side trip north of Broken Hand into the safer, but longer path around Broken Hand and then up to the rim. This hike exceeds 10 miles and 2000 feet of elevation gain, ...

This Week…They Say It’s Fall! A quick look at the calendar told me that today is the beginning of Fall!  Someone forgot to tell Texas!   Autumn teaches us the beauty of letting go. Growth requires release—it’s what the trees do.  Ka’ala, @alohakaalaAs I write this, the temperatures here are in the high 90s with an even higher feels-like temp.  It will be interesting to see what impact our unusually high temps this summer and virtually no rain will have on the few fall colors we have.  Autumn leaves don't fall, they fly. They take their time and wander on this their only chance to soarDelia Owens, Where the Crawdads SingThe months of September and October are fun for sports fans. Was excited for the next leg of the trip - and headed out of Lisboa this morning. Went West to Cascais and although it took a while to get back into the City, it was gorgeous.   The architecture was newer and gorgeous right on the water.   Stopped at a real estate window and looked at the prices.   For under 700 meters (which equates to about 7400 SF, a home was for sale for €2.4.    It was very nice. There were even some beach volleyball players on the beach today.Headed to Sintra, but kind of drove through and did not stop.    Headed further North to Nazaré and really enjoyed that.   There weren't many there, and you could actually drive down the streets.    I stopped, got a snack, and watched the waves roll in.   My tour to Berlinga Island was canceled due to the sea conditions.   It ...

If you have never been to the Black Hills in South Dakota, you do not know what you are missing.  I lived up there for a couple of years in the 70,'s and have visited it a number of times in the last 20 years.  I have a couple of friends that have never been there before so I decided to take them up there from Denver and be their tour guy.It is only a 6 hour drive from Denver.   Out trip started out on Sunday at Deadwood, great old mining town and now a town that has lots of slots machines.  Monday headed back over to Devil Tower and watch some of the climbers climbing to the top.  They say the fastest time climbing it was 18 minutes but the average is 3 to 5 hours.  I am not a climber at my age.  In the afternoon we headed to Keystone to be our base camp for the next 3 days.  The after...

Friday Flags in Southington CT Depaolo Middle SchoolI am always looking for our flag, and do make a point of stopping if I see one. I do allow extra time for road distractions, so I wasn't late. This flag was flying proud and was almost in the back yard of the listing I was going to, so it was an easy stop. The building is the assembly hall for Depaolo Middle School in Southington, CT. It is also clearly visible for the road better than 1000 ft away so how coo to drive into school and see our flag.It was a breezy day, so my wait was almost nil, and as it was so pleasant, I took a second shot for appreciation.I do like seeing our flag waving proudly in the breeze and in front of a school starts a mindset for the attendees early.Friday Flags in Southington CT Depaolo Middle School

Throwback Thursdays: look at these two moments... the photos reminded me of some great moments. In 2014 I listed a home in Bel Air, CA in the 90077 zip code, the sellers were my previous buyers. Long story short the new buyers bought the home with a different agent. Two years ago they reached out to me and we searched and were patient and this year they bought their new home with me. It is a long story, and I will just leave it at that. Now go figure a year before that Diane and I were sitting enjoying lunch somewhere in Los Angeles. She loved the food. Clearly it did not leave me with a memory as to where we had lunch. Nevertheless, it was good and the year was exactly 10 years ago.  Wishing you a safe and healthy life and I look forward to your comments. If you are looking for a knowled...

One of the nice things about living in the Scottsdale area is the number of local theater companies and small playhouses within an easy drive. A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending a local theatre production of a play called Tom Foolery. The show was hosted at the Fountain Hills Theatre in Fountain Hills, AZ. The intimate theater seats 89 patrons, making it a comfortable, setting where the audience and performers are only 10 or 15 feet apart.Tom Foolery is a musical comedy based on the satire and genius of Tom Lehrer.Although I never remember listening to Tom Lehrer growing up, his music struck a chord with me as soon as I heard it. Since then, I have spent hours listening to and viewing videos of his performances from the 1950s and 1960s. It seemed appropriate to include him...

Friday Fun…Pumpkin Spice?? The Pumpkin-spice latte, cookies, and creamers started hitting the shelves weeks ago. There are even pumpkin-spice Cheerios and Cavier!!!  While I love a pumpkin-spice scent, I draw the line there. An article I read said  that our sense of taste is “one of our weakest senses.” The author, Matt Johnson, who specializes in the application of psychology in marketing, describes it as “hallucinating with our taste buds.”   FUN FACTS:~1 in 5 Americans enjoy drinking pumpkin spice latte~There is no pumpkin in pumpkin-spice. It is a combination of cinnamon, ginger, cloves, nutmeg, and allspice. ~West Virginia is the #1 pumpkin spice-obsessed state.  Want to know where your state falls? WHAT ABOUT YOU? PUMPKIN SPICE OR NOT??
