Remembering A Second Day of Infamy September 11, 2001
Today is the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks that changed our way of life forever. It was a day that brought our country into the reality of life as so many other parts of the world live, with the threat of an enemy, intent on our destruction and fueled with hate.
With a well thought out and heavily financed plan of attack, some religious fanatics managed to bring the most powerful country on the earth to a halt. The isolation we enjoyed for years was no longer capable of keeping us safe. With the actions of the hijackers that took place well coordinated and within 60 minutes we lost our entire transportation system, and a media blackout of essential services that would last for a few long days.
What was also rekindled was the sense of survival and anger that was the tone of our country after the attacks on Pearl Harbor in 1942.
The first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade center in New York City shortly after 8:30 Am. Within minutes, the South Tower was also hit.
In Washington DC, a 3rd plane struck the Pentagon building, and alert passengers, listening to news in a fourth plane intended to hit the White House, retook the plane, which crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.
As a Nation we stood united in the sense that the source of the attacks needed to be found and punished. The manner in which it was done will be discussed by historians for years to come.
As we remember the lives lost and the events on that day 22 years ago, we should be grateful for the servicemen, and civil protectors that are ever vigilant to keep us safe. We hope to never have an event of that type again. It may not be called a day that will live in infamy, but it should be a day to remind us to be ever vigilant.
Remember the lives lost, the heroic acts of many and the strength that we have as a nation.
