Snow Fire  a novel by  Ricki Eichler McCallum  Book Review by Endre Barath

As most of my readers know, having read my posts, I am book lover and sadly have become more of a book collector, not a reader as I once was, thanks to the Internet and social media.  One of our Active Rain friends has become a published author - I'm sure everyone will join me in wishing her heartfelt congratulations on this amazing accomplishment.  

Since I'm never in my Beverly Hills office, opting to work from home well before the pandemic made this more of a 'novel' concept, I was unaware that Ricki had sent a copy of her book to my office. After a fair amount of time, understandably Ricki Eichler McCallum  reached out to me and asked if I had received her book. I was so glad she reached out to me and once she did, I went into the office sure enough, Snow Fire was waiting for me.  (It is unfortunate that those in the office that collect and sort the mail did not let me know I had an envelope waiting for me.) 

This past Friday evening, I picked up Ricki's novel and began reading. This being a long weekend with the Juneteenth holiday, I am happy to say that it was a quiet weekend and I was able to read with very few interruptions.  Snow Fire says on the cover, "murder, suspense, & intrigue" - suffice it to say the novel does not disappoint.  In fact,  this afternoon (less than 24 hours after I started) I finished the book.  Diane remarked that she doesn't recall my ever having read a book this fast. She's right, since she did not know me when I was a West Point cadet in 1974 and read  Six Days of the Condor by James Grady in about the same amount of time.  These two novels are honestly the only two books that captivated me to virtually not want to do anything other than turn the page to get to the next moment of a story. 

If you are a fan of authors such as Michael Connelly, Jack Higgins or John Le Carre, this book is for you.  Be fair warned though that once you start on Snow Fire, you will not want to put it down.  As Diane likes to say - clear the decks and don't plan to do anything other than read.  Snow Fire delves into the world of politics, police, murder and drugs on a national and international scale.   And it's also an intertwined love story riddled with fear. If you are a reader, don't miss it. And thank you, Ricki, for sharing your first novel with me.  I am looking forward to your next one and again, congratulations on your publication!
