The Concrete Jungle and May Flowers

By
Real Estate Agent with Wayne M Martin

We live in an apartment in the sky in downtown Chicago where gardens are rare. That said many do have flower pots on there balconies. This pot sits in the center of our south balcony with excellent views of downtown Chicago especially in the evening.

Interesting timing for Debe Maxwell, CRS to issue a May challenge that "April showers bring May flowers. My wife had just brought up the idea of fleeing the city for a home in the suburbs with room for a garden in the yard. Instead we went to Home Depot to procure the flowers you see in the photo above. By the way they just bloomed recently.

The season began with a small space outside the front door of our building getting an early bloom of tulips, which were beautiful but very short lived. But the idea of tulips were on my mind.

One morning, outside the building where my grandson lives, waiting for him to drive him to preschool, I caught a quick photo of the tulips plants in the center of the motor courtyard.

While not quite as pretty as the ones by our building they were in much better shape and since I originally thought of tulips when the challenge was presented I am throwing these in.

We will be enduring another spring season next year of limited flowers before we can escape to the suburbs and plant our own garden. And, rest assured we will be no competition for those who have previously posted their entries. I have a black thumb and the wife does not claim to be much better.

The challenge will be to improve our talents in that area and have some fun while doing it.

So thank you Debe Maxwell, CRS for the "April showers brings May Flowers and allowing the wife and I the opportunity to start dreaming about our garden of the future.

If my son makes the move we will follow. If not he may lose his support. Last chance at a green thumb

Wayne Martin - Your patio Geranimum's look great, especially with the American Flag! Tulips are always lovely but so short lived.

Wayne may you and your wife get your dream house where you can have a flower garden and lots of peace and relaxation.

Wayne Martin  loved your post, now with that said,  you are an easier sale than Diane... it took me about 15 years to convince her to buy a home vs rent.... now I have been telling her for three years to move from Los Angeles..... I will be dust in the Pacific Ocean before that will happen:)Endre

California is like Illinois, no logical reason to be here. But some are diehards like Diane and my son. LA is a bit safer crime wise and your weather is better. So enjoy the ocean breezes.

I'm glad to hear you have a suburb move planned in the next year or so. Not only will it be safer but you will have room for that garden - and you might both surprise yourself with greener thumbs than you expect!

Likely not but it will be fun trying. Yes, unfortunately, politics here in Chicago will not allow an improvement in safety

I had a good friend who was a landscaper. He took care of my house on the condition I did not, not even pull a weed. He knew I had a black thumb.

Wayne Martin I touch nothing. I have no living plants in the house and outside I depend on a gardener.

Getting flowers at Home Depot sounds a lot more affordable than moving to the suburbs, haha.

Well Brian England, the flowers at Home Depot are a band aid to the fact we will not move until our oldest grandchild has completed kindergarten.

Hi Wayne Martin - I love the fact that you want to improve.  You are so right.  It is hard to grow something on concrete!

I just got mine in today (entry) Wayne Martin . I had to wait until the end of May to show anything in bloom unless I were to take the pictures in a green house.

Thank you, Wayne, for sharing your flowers.  I also love the Spring tulips and the fragrant and beautiful lilac bushes.  But flowers of such beauty come and go, - way too quickly each spring season.  Makes me sad.

The wife and I laugh when we speak about our black thumbs, but we want to tru again and the city is not the place to do it.

Enjoyed your story and take care.  Having been born in Chicago, traveled there a lot for work, I am glad I no longer travel to that city.  I spent many summers as a youngster with my grandparents as well as my Aunts and Uncles who live on the north side, went to Lincoln Park Zoo, Riverview, and downtown.  This city has changed so much and not necessarily for the good.

Leanne Smith - Chicago has definitely changed and not for the good. It is a result of poor choices by some residents and definitely our politicians. That said, I miss Riverview, like the Lincoln Park Zoo and the concerts in Millennial Park on Saturday night when it was safe to walk there. And being old enough to miss Riverview makes me old!

Well Wayne that makes two of us. I as well attended the concerts in Millennial Park, Petro Bandshell (Grant Park).

Oh, I love your geraniums and those tulips are gorgeous, Wayne! I also hate how short-lived their blooms are.

As for converting your black thumb to green...I have no doubt that you and your wife will have a blast doing that together. Retirement is such a fun time to explore new and different. You've experienced the city and spectacular views, Florida and the sunshine there and I know you are going to love living in the burbs too!

Thank you so much for participating in this month's challenge, Wayne!

While you may live in a concrete jungle, if one looks hard enough you can find the colors of spring.
