Walking After Running. . .

Walking After Running

Some Thoughts on Movement

Admittedly, I don’t remember the exact moment.  Despite my lack of recall, I discovered walking was a better and more efficient way of traveling versus crawling.  Eventually, that initial tottering to and fro led to running.

Scurrying around as well as about was more fun too. Other activities made later appearances in my history of movement.

It’s interesting to notice how the concept of movement changes as time passes from one moment to the next.  It may be ironic in some ways.  While I don’t run nor even jog these days, I do walk and wonder of such things while moving.

Daily thankfulness for that ability is clearly a part of this path. I say this even as my gait may not be consistent or as steady as it once was.

Thinking of such things while walking tends to turn to observation of many things. It’s understandable that actual steps taken by babies can seem quite enthusiastic even if their hesitancy may be apparent.  And those moving more deliberately can be quite agile as they pass me at times.

Keeping movement in mind, this quote may provide you with some thoughts too:

The least movement

is of importance to all nature.

The entire ocean

is affected by a pebble.

Blaise Pascal

Good morning, Michael! First of all- I love that quote!!! I saw the first episode on Living to 100 last night and moving was stressed.

Whil I never was a runner or jogger, I rely on my morning walks to keep balance in my life.

Kathy Streib - as for the subject of "balance" - that's another word that brings much more to a conversation.  And it would likely last beyond anyone's 100th.

The thought that popped into my mind when I read this was that it's interesting we start life by sitting, crawling, walking then running and then from running to walking to sitting. Hmm.

Kat Palmiotti - the evolution (and the reflection) of our movement can be enlightening.  And perhaps a bit scary too.  🚶🚶‍♀️🚶

I don't think I have ever seen you run but perhaps the next time we get together with John Pusa and Endre Barath, Jr. we should have a short race to see who is the fastest.

Good morning Michael. I was never a true runner having bad knees since I was around twelve but I gave it a try. Am still a walker when my knees allow and always feel better when I can. Nothing opens the mind more than a walk. I like the lake front path of Lake Michigan but usually wall the bust streets of the concrete jungle. Amazing what you see when you are more interested in pondering. Time for pondering when I get home. Walking can provide more subjects to ponder. Enjoy your next walk.

Wayne Martin - intentional also applies to many things too.  Consequences, of course, but pondering as well as walking too.  Now, let's see where that thought "goes".

Good morning Michael,

I love this quote by by Blaise Pascal and have not heard of it before. I use to be a runner and that has long stopped and my knees are thanking me now. I do walk every day and find it the perfect time to ponder so many things. You have given me something new to ponder for my morning walk today.

Interesting, we start out crawling. We move on to walking, then running. We then had back to walking, and if we are lucky we will never have to crawl again.

Great quote, Michael... and you got me really thinking about how our perspective on moving changes over the course of our lifetimes. I know I'm in way less of a rush these days than I used to be. (My husband was always asking if I had a train to catch.)

We are in the midst of the whole baby taking first steps event currently with Stanley.

He never did crawl...he has this one leg tucked under crab type hop thing he does instead. Lately he has pulled himself up to furniture and used everything in his reach to lean against to get around a room. A couple of actual steps have been taken. It won't be long now!

The only time I run is if a dog is chasing me, Michael! Years ago, I used to jog a little over a mile a day but gave it up and prefer to walk at a brisk pace. It helps with the thought processes when working through a problem or contemplating that next step...

Hi Michael well my running days are long gone as are the big hiking days.  I'm lucky to walk and after a surgery that didn't go so great that's not working as well as it should have.  Awhile back I really honed in on Mind Over Matter and that's what I do to keep my head in a happy space and keep moving on.  Happy Friday 😀

Hi Michael! You've definitely given us something to ponder on our next walk, hike or run! My running days ended in my late 20's but, I do enjoy walking and cycling. I've always been a klutz and swear those sidewalks jump up and trip me - seemingly out of NOWHERE!

The last time I took a fall and complained what a klutz I am to Ray, I was stopped dead in my tracks. After threatening to make me use one of his extra wheelchair, Ray said to me, "Just be thankful you can stand...and walk."

It wasn't a pity party for him; he was merely putting things into perspective for me. As well, believe it or not, he was also trying to make me feel better by forgetting that I was sore from the fall!

Being clumsy doesn't stop me from fast-walking like I'm going to a fire though!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - yes, perspective plays a prominent role in everyday life.  The methods of movement might have been a focus in this post, but the pondering opportunities go beyond any pavement mishaps.

Michael Jacobs - I don't remember when I learned to walk but I paid attention to my babies, nieces and nephews too. Seeing them take their first steps was nothing short of a miracle that I still wonder about today, how does a baby learn to stand up and walk without formal education or training? They just do it! For me, those were the best learning lessons I learned and I wonder. If I never had children of my own who I raised since birth, would I know as much today and I learned from that parental responsibility I took to heart?

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - it's definitely interesting, intriguing and wonder-worthy how we learn "stuff of many sorts" in life.  I continue to be thankful that such opportunities exist in countless ways - known and yet-to-be-discovered - in daily life.
