Wordless Wednesday…Any Idea?

Years ago when Larry and I were walking on A1A along the beach in Delray, we saw benches with these things on them.

As we walked, we came up with all kinds of wacky ideas about what they could be or why they were there.

After asking a fellow beach walker, we learned that they are skate stoppers or skate deterrents.  They are placed on benches or handrails where skateboarders like to practice their skills.

As much fun as it can be, this can also damage the surface of the bench or railing.

What about you? Have you seen these??

Wordless Wednesday…Just Passing Through

Don’t blink or you may miss the migration of the beautiful hummingbirds.   We enjoy seeing them feed at the three feeders that we have out.

There’s also fun to watch as they chase away other hummers.  We have two small feeders on our window so we can get an up-close-and-personal look at them.

You can learn more about hummingbirds and their migration patterns.

Have you seen these beautiful amazing birds???

wordless wednesday: National Read a Book Day - 09/05/23 01:16 PM
National Read a Book Day

The ability and desire to read have always been important to me.  It goes back to my days administering psychological tests. I was floored when I learned that a great many could not read above the 3rd-grade level.

Having the ability to read opens doors for you…in your work and personal life. Books can carry you to places you may never see or light a desire in you to learn more about.

Several years ago I had the opportunity to take part in Delray Reads. There were law enforcement officers, firefighters, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles…all there to instill … (20 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…Pretty in Pink

Our walks at Green Cay Wetlands in Palm Beach County introduced me to countless wildlife…alligators, bobcats, the purple gallinule, and the roseate spoonbill.

While I love all animals (except snakes), I have a special fondness for Roseate Spoonbills. When you see one, it’s like spotting a special fairy all dressed up in pink.
These beautiful birds are found along the southeastern coastlines of Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. They are waders, foraging in shallow waters for shrimp, crayfish, crabs, minnows, mollusks, and other small fish.

If you can, take some time to enjoy the beautiful creatures Mother Nature shares with us.

Wordless Wednesday…What’s This?

Larry and I first saw one of these in Auburn, AL when we were there for a Football game.

They make sense because when you need it…you truly need it.

If you’ve ever been on a bike ride and had to walk your bike on a long walk back to your car or home when something broke, you’ll appreciate this bike repair station!

They include Philips and Standard screwdrivers, Tire levers, headset pedal wrench, and other tools.
Have you seen any in your area?

Wordless Wednesday…Happy Birthday Future Astro

On Saturday we helped Raffe celebrate his birthday but today is the day he turns 6 years old!

It’s hard to believe that just days before Hurricane Harvey would turn Houston into one huge lake, my niece and her husband welcomed this energetic 9-day-old into their arms. We all fell in love with him immediately!

Raffe is interested in two things now…the Astros and firefighters. For his party, held in the Parish Hall of his church, we all wore our Astros attire. My brother rigged up a screen to show the Astros’ game (we lost) and there was … (17 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…Identity and Identify

There are many external factors pulling on all of us from the moment we enter this world. And, that’s not to mention the factors and characteristics we’re born with.
It’s no wonder that our young people spend much of their high school and college years trying to figure out who they are.

Add to that the recently introduced, confusing issue of pronouns.

I had to chuckle when Larry and I saw this in a parking lot…

Wordless Wednesday…Don’t Play With Your Food

How many times have you had that said to you? Oh yes, I made all kinds of designs with my spaghetti when I was a kid.

Larry and I usually have yogurt, fruit, and nuts after our morning walk.  I got bored one morning and returned to my childhood days of playing with my food.

So…next time your kids are playing with their food, be careful…you might be stifling their creativity!

Part of the secret of a success in life is to eat what you like and let the food fight it out inside.

Wordless Wednesday…Only in Texas

On our way to our morning walk last Sunday, Larry and I did a double-take.

That’s right…a horse tied up at a light pole!  (Sweet Larry knew that I’d want a picture of this so he did a U-turn and pulled in so I could get a shot )

It’s not like we’ve never seen a horse in Texas! And during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, you’ll see not only horses but chuckwagons as well!

Wordless Wednesday…The Duck Whisperer

One of the extra perks Larry and I get from walking is seeing what animals we’ll see that day.

We may see snakes (thankfully not that often), squirrels, coyotes, rabbits, and birds of all sizes.

Sunday I was taking videos of a Mallard family at Meyer Park. I began walking backward and they kept following me.  I stopped and they kept coming! When I turned around I saw my fellow walkers watching me and getting a big chuckle.

One walker called me the Duck Whisperer!!!

Wordless Wednesday…S’Mores Through the Years

Truth be told, there are many other desserts that I’d rather have, however, there is something about S’mores that turn them into a  special treat.
Maybe it’s the anticipation of getting the right char on the marshmallow or perhaps it’s seeing how the chocolate and marshmallow melt together to form a perfect gooey mess.

We had some of the family over before the 4th and S’mores were on the menu. I've shared some photos of S’mores through the years…the Kids have grown but the S’mores stay the same.

Wordless Wednesday…Location, Location, Location

A phrase that is often heard when talking about home buying is…
Location, location, location!

Choose your home wisely because there are some things that can be updated, changed, or fixed in your new home but location is not one of them.

Just ask this cicada!

We saw this cicada emerging from its nymph exoskeleton as we were leaving my brother’s home. They’re fascinating to watch. This one, however, might have chosen a better location for its temporary home.  The car was blocking the other cars so we had to move it.

I have always been fascinated with these creatures. When we … (18 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…Selfie Day!

Today, June 21, is National Selfie Day! I know that there are some who do not like to take selfies…and that’s ok.

When I was in FL, my good friend and I were the only ones who took photos of the “family” dinners. Consequently, we were rarely in the photos. We decided to take a selfie together at the dinner so we’d have a record of our being there!
Believe it or not, the first selfie was taken in 1839 by Robert Cornelius!  Of course, smartphones with cameras weren’t around then but he did manage to take a selfie!  BTW- it … (23 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…Mini-Me Loves Her Uncle Larry

Mini-me loves her Uncle Larry, especially when they get to bake together!

During our Zoom Meeting yesterday, Mini-Me and Larry had fun baking biscuits for her dog. The recipe calls for flour, chicken stock, applesauce, and an egg.

Later, we took a quick trip to Kickerillo to check on one of the bluebird boxes,

We are blessed to have young people in our lives, especially my Mini-Me!!!

Wordless Wednesday…Who the Heck Are You?

Many of you may know that Larry and I monitor several bluebird boxes at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve and our own home.

Here are the 5 beautiful bluebird eggs as of May 22.

Bluebird eggs take 16 to 20 days to hatch so we checked on the box on June 4. What doesn't belong in this picture??

We think it is a brown-headed cowbird egg. Long story short…mama Cowbird lays an egg in any available nest and then leaves to follow her food source. She does not return. The host mama bird incubates and feeds it. (See, it happens in the … (22 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…A Lite Remodel

Larry did a lite remodel on one of our bluebird boxes out at Kickerillo.

BACKSTORY
Last month, we had 5 adorable bluebird chicks in the box. And just like that they disappeared overnight.

There were no feathers or indications of any kind of struggle around the box. We are guessing that a snake took them all.

Since the mating season is winding down, we decided to leave the nest there to make it easier for mama bluebird to start another brood.

Before we could blink, she’d laid 5 beautiful blue eggs in the box.

Wordless Wednesday…So Quickly

It wasn’t that long ago that I was rolling down a small hill with our grandson, Hugo. And it seems like a few years ago that Larry and I had lunch with him in the cafeteria of his elementary school.
BLINK…and Hugo is graduating from high school and will become a Jayhawk (University of Kansas) in the fall. We are so excited for him…he is smart, kind, and very goal oriented!

Congratulations, Hugo!  Soar high!!!

Recently Raffe has decided that fighting fires was his new calling.  He no longer wants to be a garbageman.

As Raffe was suiting up because he got a call to put out a fire, his mom was talking to him.  He said…
