Thomas J Nelson Recharge to Take Charge
The Zoom call presented by Thomas J Nelson this week was a tutorial on how to sustain a healthy real estate business and also lifestyle. As a successful real estate agent/broker and investor since 1989 he has come to appreciate the need to relax and step back for vacation in order to clear the mind and also to recharge the body to maintain a healthy family relationship and to also better serve his clients.
As a 3rd generation realtor he knows the business well and also recognizes the need to step way at times to not only maintain his alertness but to also appreciate the fruits of his labors.
Over 60% of his business comes from military clients both first timers as well as second home buyers.
His team, or as he prefers to call them, his alliance, consists of 12 agents, all Buffini coached, that cover all of San Diego County.
Failure to Recharge
A failure to recharge fails all 5 circles of life. He believes that to properly serve all that we desire, we must bring the best of us, and not the rest of use. We cannot operate like a wrung out towel.
By not recharging, our personal and mental health are affected.
Family, friends and relationships are impacted as well. When your conversation is all business all the time you will get tuned out by those around you.
The business also takes a hit as it is all built on relationships and lapses in mental acuity will cause mistakes.
Our spiritual life will be affected as overwork would mean not going to church or being part of the activities that we once held dear.
With this fatigue, finances will also be affected as we may lose clients for lack of proper attention.
Who Runs Who?
If the business is our focus and may be all consuming 24/7. Thomas made the disclaimer that his presentation was not meant to create followers, but more specifically students.
As a stated, a follower will just do what they are told while a student will question and often adapt what they feel is appropriate from a presentation and disregard the rest.
He feels the experience of the real estate business can be improved with better habits and better disciplines which will allow for better real estate experiences.
There would be less arguments and confrontation.
Superhero Complex
We cannot be superheroes for our clients. We cannot be all things to all people at all times of the day/week/month. They believe that doing anything less is a negative reflection on their abilities. There is a direct correlation between sleep and health. If we don't get enough rest, we can't function properly. Also, without sufficient sleep we put our health at risk. Sleep and health have an impact on our ability to manage our anxieties.
He offered an example of people having a meeting with their oncologist, and the oncologist asking them if they want the good news or the bad news. We don't want the doctor that starts to weep and creates a negative before the diagnosis has been fully presented.
We want the doctor that presents the bad news but also demonstrates a positive and offers the good news on how the issue is going to be tackled and the positives of the treatments.
The professional calmly offers the plan of attack and how any obstacles will be overcome. To do this they not only have the knowledge but are reassuring as they are healthy and rested.
Guilt Management
Some agents may feel the need to work a bit longer on a day as they are feeling guilty about taking some time during the day to do something. If time is allotted for that personal event there should be no guilt to replace with over work.
We should retain the mindset of someone working a conventional job and when we are supposed to be working, we work and when it's time to play we play.
Greed Management
For some people there are just not enough hours in a day or not enough leads to chase to earn a dollar. There is little that can be done for these people. Everyone has their financial goals and need to work sufficient to reach these goals. The rewards for which are time with family and friends.
We need to identify the requirement to maintain reasonable office hours, taking time off and being able to take vacations.
Like any full time job, setting office hours creates the structure of the business. Set a reasonable workday and hold to it. At 5 or 6 PM, turn the card and close the business. Clients will respect the time and work with us if they really like us and how we perform.
If one hasn't worked to a structure before, then starting by taking 1 or 2 days a week to get attuned to the schedule is the best way to start. Over time, add the rest of the days until it becomes accepted by yourself and others. Doctors, dentists, accountants all work to a structured time and their clients accept that. If your hours are established your clients will work to them as well.
Take a day off and keep to it. A day to rest ad recharge are needed to stay at optimum performance.
He also maintains the structure of not working on vacation. The agent that takes a phone call while on vacation someplace is really not on vacation, just working from someplace else.
After one spends their hard-earned money to travel to exotic places, how important is a call from someone asking about a listing?
He offered his Wrap it up slide to demonstrate how important time off is to our business and quality of life.
By re-adjusting our mindsets we will become better agents for our clients as well as better companions to our souses and friends,
