Tammy Lankford Community Facebook Pages
The Zoom call this week was presented by Tammy Lankford, long time ActiveRain member and also broker/owner of Lane Realty servicing the Lake Sinclair area of Georgia.
Tammy Lankford started her Community page for Lake Sinclair app 10 years ago and as moderator, tries to keep it informational to events of the area as well as free of people looking to self-promote businesses. It is called Lake Sinclair area Community Page. While the Lake Sinclair area is primary, the community page also allows for residents of the 3 counties that bound the lake to join the group. She does have a vetting procedure to join and is quick to ban all that do not answer her questions honestly and properly.
She described here quest to get people involved and opted to set up a community page and not a business page as it was more likely to attract people. A business page has its purposes, but she felt she would be better served by not self-promoting. She does allow other agents to promote their listings as she has buyers that do join seeking information about the region and it would be a better source for new listings.
She does not allow other agents to self-promote and is quick to ban them if they try. To post to the group, she also vets them properly.
Her group has almost 3,800 people, and there are daily posts by restaurants, as well as weekly posts by people that sell seafood and produce.
Lake Sinclair is owned by Georgia Power, and as such they have full control of the waters as well as the rules regarding docks, seawalls and building on the lake.
In times when water is high especially after a lot of rain, any flow of water over the spillways needs to be managed properly and controlled by Georgia power. This can be an annoyance to people whose waterfront is under water, but the safety of people below the spillway is also important.
Tammy's business page is linked to the community page by way of the links setting found on the right side of the community page, along the border. She maintains prime position as moderator and does not allow her competitors to link.
She is also cautious about allowing others to share her pages as it can be used by spammers who will start with a simple page and then swap out for something that could be a negative to all that see it. She offered an example of someone posting about a lost dog and are seeking the owner and they will turn comments off. If 50-100 people share the lost dog post, it can be changed and all that have shared the post are now vulnerable to a link that could infect their computer with a virus.
While the lake has app 10,000 residences, she allows for people looking for information to join. Her page is there for members of the community to interact as well as for some of the local businesses to promote special events. Not everyone can post to the page until she checks them for authenticity and allows them access. Again, the page is Lake Sinclair area Community Page.
She interacted well with the questions presented as well as detailing how she monitors the site, how she got it started, the rules for engaging, etc.
It was well presented, and we all learned a lot on setting up and maintaining a community page.
