Ask An Ambassador: Blogging is Risky Business

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.LizTour.com SAL.2002007747

Your reputation is at risk with every blog post.  You're being watched and first impressions formed.

Even if you don't have any comments on a post, you're being watched, just check your stats if you need proof.

Some people lurk, some engage, either way, people are out there and what you post matters.

If you're in an established community such as ActiveRain, you may establish your reputation over time.  Be it good or bad, people have thoughts about you based on your comments, your posts, and how you interact with other members.

Reputations can be heavily influenced from the very first contact, that first blog post.  If I'm scrolling the blog roll and the first post I see from you is a rant against your state's governor, followed by posts about crypto and other things that have nothing to do with real estate, you're not going to keep my attention.

We're all human, so I don't expect 100% real estate posts.  It's okay to show your personal life and the things that motivate you.  Those same things may be the key to providing common ground for a prospective client.  Who knows when someone else might like Chihuahuas too??

Many potential clients find us as a result of internet searches.  That post they find is their first impression of us, it's our one shot at getting them to explore a bit further and reach out to us.  So whether that post was #5 we ever wrote, or #1,683, that post is their FIRST impression of us.

Blogging can be risky business.  There's little room for being sloppy, or halfway covering a topic or not making an effort to provide a quality post.  That post that you're just "mailing in", may be the one post that someone sees first, and you don't get a second chance to make a first impression.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - as we know lurking is a common activity among those who newly arrive in ActiveRanLand.   And it's not that rare among other members too.

Why should anyone second guess that it occurs in everyday life?   Questions like this should provide pause.  Then again if shoulda coulda woulda were the law of any land - where might we be?  Hmm - darn questions never seem to stop. . .

We were members for 3 years before our first comment or blog post.  I still read more than I comment.  Some members have the train wreck attraction, what are they going to post next??  More questions to be answered :)

I see some things written that do make me cringe. I wonder if the writer has thought about that?

I see things that I wonder how their broker would react if seen?  Some things are best left for Facebook, or closed groups.

Wise words Bill.  I read some posts or comments and think......really?  You really think I'm going to refer any clients to you. Reputation means something still.....in today's world!

Same here.  There are people in this community that I'd refer to in a heartbeat.  ActiveRain is my starting point for all referrals.  Other people here, nope, not happening.  They don't play well enough in the sandbox, misbehave for the sake of points, etc.

Hello, Liz and Bill Spear This post is quite intriguing and accurate. Personally, I started commenting and posting on Active Rain within just weeks of joining. I perceived it as a welcoming community. It's true that clients pay attention and first impressions are so very important

I registered, then went away, then lurked for a bit, then a comment here and there before that first post.

Some of our members have been bounced for bad behavior and it was deserved even though there are some I still miss but that is what Facebook is for (sometimes)   I completely agree that people should realize they are not speaking to themselves alone in a locked room. Judgement and a filter and self awareness are all welcome additions

Lise, The folks that got bounced did it to themselves (whether they'll admit that or not is another story).  You've got to be able to read the room, and even then there's no guarantee that there's not one person in that room that will make something public.

Good evening Bill,

You are right blogging is risky business, your reputation is at risk with every blog post. Your words are the first thing a potential or previous client sees and like it or not it could be their first impression! Like it or not you are judged!!

It can be positive, or negative, but if negative, there's little likelihood that a consumer will provide a 2nd chance.  There are too many other agents to choose from.

Hi Bill- I lurked and then commented, and finally wrote a post. You make an excellent post, though. Social media and blogging give us a perceived "invisibility" cloak (had to throw in Harry Potter) but in reality it's like The Emperor Has No Clothes.

I have to operate under the assumption that everything I post can be seen by clients, my broker, etc.

Your words are true and one example that I can think of is that I know my friend Michael Jacobs reads more of my posts than he comments on, haha.

I think we may all be guilty on that count :)

Good morning. First impressions are indeed important and that goes for our posts also. Who knows which of our blogs will be seen first? And by who? (whom?)

Sep 13, 2023 05:01 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

I know most of our blogging sourced clients have found a single post at the end of the web search.  So if I wanted to win them as clients, I'd better have done that post well enough to get ranked and then to have the right answers when the consumer clicks.

Sooo true, I had a past client the other day mention a blog post. He has NEVER left a comment (when I share to social media), but always reads them.

We had a listing appointment once where they had a printed copy of our market report on the coffee table.  They lurk, they don't comment, but they call when they need us.

Very good insight and caution.  My social media presence, professionally, is limited to AR, LinkedIn. I do not use FB for real estate and my FB posts are only visible to my contacts.

Sep 13, 2023 08:44 AM

My LinkedIn is focused on my engineering work and not real estate since I can't have two profiles.

My FB page is public, but I also limit myself to mostly pictures of nature, our cats, dogs, bees, etc. and the occasional life event.
I shut down anything political quite a few years back.

We truly do need to always be aware of what we are putting out there. I know that blogs I wrote years ago, often cause me to receive calls.

Wise advice as always, Bill. Like it or not first impressions on-line can make a huge impact on your reputation. And certainly you can easily ruin a good reputation with 1 bad post or negative comment. And you won't necessarily know it.

True, sometimes people just disengage, assuming they were ever engaged to start with.

Hi Liz and Bill,

I would take it one step further and say that everything that is on-line puts your reputation at risk, including your marketing and listing presentation.

As you stated we need to keep this in mind with every thing that is posted.

Sep 17, 2023 09:34 AM

No doubt, anywhere that we post can have positive or negative consequences.
