Ask An Ambassador: Balancing Bots & Humans

By

It's chicken and the egg all over again.

If you don't write to be found, you don't get found by the bots, and you'll rank on page 186 of the search results and you don't get found by potential clients.

But if you write with too much emphasis on the bots, you might get found (or have Google toss you to the side for being TOO bot focused), and the human who finds you is going to get tired of seeing your keyword phrase if it isn't naturally blended in.

"If you're interested in buying Cincinnati patio homes, you should call a Cincinnati patio home real estate agent to help you buy a Cincinnati patio home because a Cincinnati patio home real estate agent will have more Cincinnati patio home knowledge than a regular real estate agent".

Ooooof.   Yeah, the keyword is there, but who wants to read that?

I'm no SEO expert, I don't keep up on the latest Google algorithms about how to use keywords, how often they should appear, or what size color and font you should use :)

But what I do know is it's pointless to get found if you can't get a reader to stick around and decide that you're providing useful information.

So how do you do that?

1.  Get local.  The more local you focus, the more likely to narrow your competition AND be in a specific area for a ready-now buyer or seller.

2.  Provide the information your audience would want to know.  Is there an HOA?  Price ranges?  Amenities?  New construction available?

3.  Include eye candy.  Photos or videos, but something besides a wall of words.

4.  Keep coming back to the topics that are important to your business AND generate contacts from potential clients.

5.  Write naturally.  Don't try and overly force your keywords.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

You mean no one wants to read a comment about Kalispell by a Kalispell real estate broker who lives in Kalispell and works in Kalispell and has a Kalispell dog and drinks Kalispell Koolaid and is a true Kalispellian? (Kalispellite?) (Kalispellonian?)

Great post as always Bill! I had to laugh at Kat Palmiotti comment. I guess I could say you mean no one wants to read about a real estate agent who lives in Canyon Creek, Austin, Texas, works in Canyon Creek Austin TX, supports activities in Canyon Creek Austin TX, lists and sells in Canyon Creek Austin TX etc. etc.

I think pieces at a time to put the whole picture together are the way to get the message across of where we work and what we do.

Bill it's interesting but what you're saying is exactly what we all learned way back wen in the early days of blogging here in the rain.  And I am forever grateful for that...by a long shot. I was amazed at how quickly 'way back then' we were getting ranked and found by many.  I was equally surprised to hear from other brokers with this question - how on earth did you manage (as a small company) to get ranked in so many areas and topics. That was when I knew it worked.  Pick a subject, area, niche and roll with it just like this and you can too.  You, my friend have this perfected to a capitol P.

Some fundamentals continue to be fundamental.  They still work for us a decade+ later, so I have no reason to change.  Certain subdivision and niches we will continue to rank well for even if I do nothing further on the topic.

Hello Bill (and Liz too) - genuine and natural.  Sounds like an excellent plan while getting your point made.    Good advice for the seesaw and when seeking blogging balance that captures eyes and contacts that fit (no pun intended).

I find it a lot more comfortable to just write naturally and be myself.  When I read something that is blatantly pushing a keyword, it gets tough to stay with it.

Liz and Bill Spear - I heard about bots, but I'm not very tech savy when it comes to bots because I found it to be bewildering. All the years of do this don't do that, but now bots is important makes my head swirl. The concept of too much or too little bots makes me think of Goldilocks and the Three Bears - one chair was to hard, one too soft, the other just right. I like to stick to what I know and stay true to myself. After 20 years in the business, I am doing just fine. Thanks to you and ActiveRain blogging has made me feel more natural and accepting and I still get business the old fashioned way locally by following the Golden Rule.

Chasing the algorithm is just not for me, nor you.  We know what works for us and that's what we'll keep doing.  Golden Rule real estate is a shared common ground.  Find the right house, not a house.

Hi BLiz,
I'm not smart enough to outwit the bots but I am smart enough not to try, so I just write in my own voice and let the ranking fall where they might. When I was active I had very good rankings and 75% of my business came from website and blog traffic. I don't know how I'd fair now with all the paid rankings stepping on organic efforts.

Oct 12, 2022 07:13 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

What I'm seeing if I go long tail is the paid people are for the most part not there.  They're trying to capture bigger keywords than I want, so if I push hard on particular subdivisions or niche homes, changes are they are there for the taking.

I started doing websites in 2004 when I bought my first hotel in NC. Back then you could change the color of your font to the same color as your background and type "hotels Outer Banks" 50 times and rank number one on Google and AOL. lol Times have changed but I am still a high tech real estate agent :)

Black hat SEO is a bit harder to pull off since it's bots and not humans doing the ranking.

And since the algorithms change from time to time, it is just better it seems to me to write consistently with information for the clients you want to attract.

A ring is at least an opportunity.  Sometimes it's just to answer a question, sometimes a new client.

There has to be decent flow or it gets distracting.  The other day I was on an interview panel for a potential new hire.  She said "you know" so many times that the actual substance of her answers was lost.
