What Makes Prospect CT A Fine Place to Call Home? Part 2Prospect CT is blessed to have services that are often the envy of some of the neighboring towns. The house that was once the home for the Hotchkiss family farm is now the towns' museum. The farmland itself is now a town recreation area and almost at the town center. The land is level and affords activities such as baseball, soccer, walking/running tracks; basketball courts; volleyball; in season ice skating, and a large playscape for kids with a gateway titled Field of Dreams. Behind town hall are tennis courts that are also used with moveable nets for pickleball, and adjacent to that is McGrath Park, which is stocked with fish for town anglers. There's a little league complex with 5 diamonds and a singular field for special games.I...

Friday Flags in Southington CT Spring Lake VillageWhile showing a client a condo in Spring Lake Village earlier this week, I had to pass the community center.Adjacent to the lake where the flag poles and there was just a small breeze, and the flags were barely moving.I didn't have time to stop but was determined to come back before I left the complex.  On the swing back, I parked and walked closer and just stood and whispered for a breeze that would give me the shot I wanted. Within minutes, my wish was granted, and our flag waved a thank you to me for waiting. The buyer is still deciding but most likely will come back as Spring Lake Village is one of the finer 55+ communities in the area. There are over 600 units, but they are so spread out as to not feel congested. I'm sure the residen...

The gig economy has been around a lot longer than the term, which was coined in 1915, according to some sources. While the gig economy has been growing for decades, the pandemic saw a boom in the number of traditional 9-5ers shifting to self-employment and business ownership. The IRS has noticed the shift to gig work, freelancing and self-employment, and their auditors and agents are increasingly focusing on those brand-new small business owners. Taxpayers, holding a traditional job that issues a W-2, have less than a 1% chance of getting a notice from the IRS; the audit rate is on the rise for small business owners. And if you work in the gig economy that means you too.The rising audit rate for small business owners is certainly cause for concern. If you’re being audited by the IRS or ...

Remembering A Second Day of Infamy September 11, 2001Today is the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks that changed our way of life forever. It was a day that brought our country into the reality of life as so many other parts of the world live, with the threat of an enemy, intent on our destruction and fueled with hate. With a well thought out and heavily financed plan of attack, some religious fanatics managed to bring the most powerful country on the earth to a halt. The isolation we enjoyed for years was no longer capable of keeping us safe. With the actions of the hijackers that took place well coordinated and within 60 minutes we lost our entire transportation  system, and a media blackout of essential services that would last for a few long days. What was also rekindled was th...

I have shared what I remember most about 9/11 before, and have made a commitment to share this memory each and every year on September 11, so today once again I am fulfilling that commitment with this blog.September 11, 2001 is a day I will never forget!  It is a day forever imprinted on my heart and mind.   September 11, 2001 is a day each of us has a special reason why this day will forever be remembered.  September 11, 2001 is a day we will not only forever remember the vicious attack on our country, but also a day to honor those who lost there lives.  It is a day for us to reflect on the memories, and thoughts which went through our mines as the events of September 11, 2001 unfolded 20 years ago. Below is my special memory of that day, it is an event which hit close to home, and wil...

Friday Flags in Southington CTThis week, my flag sight caught a waving banner on the town green in Southington CT. It was proudly waving atop a tall pole along with a flag for missing POWs.For 2 weekends at the end of September, there will be thousands of people walking along these streets for the Southington CT Apple Harvest Festival. This should be their 55th year. There will be a full schedule of events including a parade. My favorite will be the apple fritters that will be sold daily.Friday Flags in Southington CT

Labor Day this year is a bright, sunny day, which means a great day for all the Labor Day plans that have been made.  For me the only thing I have planned for today is to just get some much needed extra sleep and rest, after a long drive back from my vacation. Normally we plan on having the family over and putting some food on the grill.  But this year is just my wife and I, so we are just going to put a couple of nice thick filet mignons on the grill and enjoy them together. I hope that each and everyone of you spend this Labor Day doing what you enjoy, you have earned it.  Whatever you do make sure this is a safe and happy Holiday for you and your family!!! Happy Labor Day 2023!!!

Friday Flags: A Place of Honor in Central CTOn a drive, in state this week, a sign made me take a detour to a memorial I have seen many times in the past. The signpost read Iwo Jima Highway, and I remembered the Iwo Jima Memorial that occupies a place of honor near the campus of Central CT State University.I don't know how accurate the sign may be that describes it as a National Memorial, but the base of the statue shows the names of the Connecticut servicemen that lost their lives on Iwo Jima during World War II.The battle to take the islands was the fiercest in the pacific and cost almost 7,000 US marines and Navy personnel. At the end of the battle, a squad of Marines raised the flag atop Mt Suribachi, which was the inspiration for the completion of the battle. There wasn't much wind, ...
